Police warn of local paving scam
Huron County OPP are
warning residents of a
possible paving scam
following an incident in
Howick on May 13.
A couple reported had
come to the door on May 6,
offering to pave their
laneway for a great deal.
He stated he was in the
area doing work and had a
spare load of asphalt he
could sell them at a
discounted price, adding
they would need to act
quickly or he would move
on.
The owner of the property
asked if they would take
$3500 cash and a deal was
struck on the spot.
A paving crew was at the
residence within minutes to
start the job.
Part way through the job
the property owners began
having concerns about the
quality of the paving job.
The recycled pavement was
described as crumbling on
the edges and was a mix of
gravel and sand, not
asphalt.
At this point, the
salesman offered to take the
couple around to some
other laneways he had
paved in nearby Fordwich.
The homeowners were
taken to two other laneways
and the quality of the
paving jobs they saw were
well below standard. In
fact, one of the recently
paved driveways had
dandelions and grass
poking through the
asphalt.
While the salesman was
showing off the other
laneways, the paving crew
back at the residence had
packed up and left, leaving
the driveway unfinished,
with the overall quality was
well below standard. The
salesman left the couple a
business card claiming to
be from Mississauga while
marketing themselves as
"specialists in recycled
asphalt and highway grade
asphalt':
The homeowner has
contacted the salesman
several times over the last
week and has been given
numerous excuses and
reasons as to why the
company is not able to
return in to finish the job to
the customer's satisfaction.

scammers will be going
door-to-door offering
numerous services such a
paving, and roofing. If
someone comes to your
door, ask to see some
identification. If you are
interested in what this
person has to offer, take
time to find out about their
business and their offer.
TO PREVENT FRAUD:
Always get at least three
quotes on any project around
the house, regardless of the
service or product being
sold.
Never sign a contract with-
out checking the credibility
of the company or person
selling the product or serv-
ice. Get references from
other customers to ensure
the quality of work. Check
out the Better Business
Bureau for any flagged
businesses.
Never sign a contract with-
out running it by a trusted
family member, friend or
neighbour.
Never fully open or unlock
your door to anyone you
don't know. Talk through a
locked or secured door if you
don't know their identity. If
you don't want them at your
door, tell them to "go away
If they don't, call the police.
Report suspicious persons
or activity to police
immediately.
According to police, there
is no magic to preventing
fraud. If something sounds
too good to be true, or if
something seems off, it is
probably a scam. Trust your
instincts, not the stranger at
your door.
