Seaforth-area man calls experience 'surreal' Scott Wishart QMI Agency Seaforth-area farmer and writer Chris Spaleta just might be the ideal person to have won lifetime tickets, for two, to every performance of the Stratford Festival. Following the onstage announce- ment of his name by the Red Queen, Cynthia Dale, at Monday's perform- ance of Alice Through the Looking Glass at the Avon Theatre, a sur- prised -and -grateful Spaleta talked to media of his lifelong love of theatre and the special appreciation he feels for the Festival, in particular. Spaleta, who is 30, saw each play on the Festival playbill last season. He's seen more than 40 productions here in the past few years. "This is amazing theatre," he said of the Festival and its appeal. "It's unbelievable ... top notch." And the story gets better. In an appropriate twist, it turns out his wife, Maria, nee Whyte, is a relative of the late Stratford Festival founder, Tom Patterson. The Festival honoured Spaleta Monday as its 26 -millionth patron since its inception in 1953. The prize package is valued in the neighbour- hood of $3,000 a year in tickets for the rest of his life. Stratford Festival executive direc- tor Anita Gaffney said the prize give- away was a great way to celebrate a milestone in the Festival's life. Consider that 66,000 attended the first season. Nearly half -a -million came last year. "It's amazing how we've grown," she said. "Think of what makes up that number, as well. It's people from all across Canada, all over the United States, all over the world. "It's a real achievement:' From his part, Spaleta found the whole experience something of a dream. "It was just surreal," he said. "The show was surreal enough to begin with.
