Local photographer releases fine art book
Whitney South
Huron Expositor
Darlene McCowan always knew
she loved painting and art, even from
a young age.
In her later years, she was intro-
duced to photography, a medium
that immediately caught her atten-
tion, becoming the focus of her
work.
Originally seeing the art form as
just a hobby, she eventually chose to
leave her fulltime career, choosing
instead to pursue her dream as a self-
employed photographer, starting her
own business laical Photography here
in Seaforth.
In the eight years since opening
her own studio, McCowan focused
not only on her portrait work, but
also personal fine art project.
She started taking pictures of inan-
imate objects that reminded her of a
sad thought, feeling or situation that
has caused hurt and anguish in her
life at one time or another.
More than just a series of photos,
the project soon became an outlet
and release for her, as she created
images representing her inner secrets
and feelings.
"Capturing and sharing these
images have helped me to heal, for-
give and leave behind past hurts and
move forward with my life's journey,"
said McCowan in an email to the
Expositor. She continued to explain
how the project helped her realize
every person has secrets that "lie in
the shadows of their thoughts and
past experiences and that some peo-
ple manage to live with these shad-
owed secrets and perhaps even for-
get about them."
For McCowan, the toll these
thoughts can take on ones mind, not
to mention the stress they can cause,
sometimes creating havoc in daily
life, is something she knows all too
well.
"These images are simply a way for
me to put the past behind me and
carry on," she said.
To complete the project, McCowan
has put together a book of her favour-
ite images, titled In the Shadows.
Throughout the process of creating
her book, she knew releasing the
compilation was an excellent chance
to give back.
For every book sold during the
month of May, McCowan will be
donating $10 to the Canadian Mental
Health Association in support of
Canadian Mental Health Week,
which runs from May 4 to 11.
Books are $25 each and can be
ordered by contacting Darlene@
