What makes you happy?
Column
Naomi Pelss
Director of Seaforth
Co-operative Children's
Centre, mother of three
I have been participating
in a "happiness challenge"
on social media.
I saw a friend posting
things that made her happy
for this challenge and I
thought it sounded like a
great idea.
I looked up what the 100
days of happiness challenge
was all about. (100 days of
happiness.com) Seems sim-
ple enough. Post something
that makes you happy every
day for 100 days. I have only
just begun but I notice that it
has changed the way I think
about my days. It has forced
me to find something good,
happy, and positive about
my day and share it. Some
days have been easier than
others, I'll be honest.
Some days I wanted to just
whine and complain and
really had a hard time focus-
ing on what made me happy
that day. But no matter what,
I can always find something
good. Some days I had a
hard time choosing just one
happy moment when I had
found so many throughout
the day. I started looking
ahead to the future and
thinking about my upcom-
ing happy moments.
My friends and family
started sharing their daily
happy moments with me. I
talked to my children about
it.
"What makes you happy? I
asked them one morning
recently.

"Hockey!" exclaimed my one son.
"Horses and unicorns!" said my daugh-
ter. "When Mommy gives me hugs and
kisses!" exclaimed my youngest son,
trying to not only win my affections, but
this happiness "competition" as he saw
it.
To continue my interest in what
makes people happy, I decided to ask
the children at the childcare centre.
The question was posed, "What
makes you happy?" The answers were
simple and sweet.
Many answers involved playing; what
children do best.
Other answers involved family and
people.
A lot of children responded that their
Mommy and Daddy or friends make
them happy.
Emma answered, "People that make
me laugh':
Colin said, "When my Dad tucks me
into bed':
Darren said, "When I go fishing with
my friends',' and Zoey exclaimed, "My
mommy makes me happy!"
I love that children are able to find
the simple joys in life.
Children seem to find happiness in
everyday experiences easier than we do
as adults.
We could learn a lot from them.
Children do not need to challenge
themselves to find happy moments.
Joyful moments occur naturally
throughout children's days and they
express their emotions with a purity
and innocence that some adults seem
to have lost.
Let's challenge ourselves to find the
happy moments in our days.
If you are having a difficult time, just
ask a child.
What makes you happy?
Catholic Education Week at St. Anne's
St. Anne's school news
Claire Gordon
Minister of Public Relations
This past week was a busy one for
the sports teams at St. Anne's. Seven
Junior Badminton players attended
WOSSAA and one of our girls dou-
bles placed second! Our Girls' Rugby
team won their first tournament and
our Senior Soccer players had their
first games. The Junior Girls' and
Boys' Soccer teams will begin their
first games this week.
The annual Catholic Leadership
Day Forum was also this past week.
Students from each school partici-
pated in the day. The theme of the
day was "An Amazing Race Against
Poverty" and the day was an overall
success and the students had a great
time learning more about poverty
and food banks and how they as stu-
dent leaders can help. Some students
and staff at St. Anne's participated in
the Vow of Silence on Tuesday. They
were voiceless in order to stand in
solidarity with the millions of people
without around the world who are
denied basic human rights. The
silence then ended with a Break the
Silence concert, which included rock
bands within the school.
This is Catholic Education Week
and we'll be busy using social media
to connect with youth across the
province. On Wednesday, we'll be
tweeting out #spiritualselfies before
and after our Simultaneous Mass
with every single Catholic high
school in the province of Ontario.
We'll be on Instagram for Throwback
Thursday sending out photos of our
Baptism or First Communions. On
Friday, we're showing our love to
Pope Francis, who is a model of serv-
ice and kindness. Keep an eye for
random acts of kindness #Francis -
