Support available for veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion
Huron Expositor staff
Royal Canadian Legion officials
would like local veterans to know if
they need support they can find at
their local branches.
"In light of the recent closing of Vet-
erans Affairs offices, it is important for
all Canadians who served in the Cana-
dian Armed Forces are aware that the
Royal Canadian Legion is there to
support all veterans, serving and
retired Regular Force members and
members of the of Canada's Reserve
Forces," a press release from the Royal
Canadian Legion stated.
Seaforth's branch 156 is located at
123 Main St. and can be reached by
calling 519-527-0740.
With over 1460 branches across
Canada in urban and rural areas, the
press release stated that the Royal
Canadian Legion has highly trained
and specialized volunteer and com-
mand service officers dedicated to
helping all veterans, serving and
retired, for access to the care and sup-
port they deserve.
These service officers
assist veterans in under-
standing what help is avail-
able and how to get it.
"We are your 'boots on
the ground support' across
the country and if you are
a veteran, retired or a serv-
ing member or a family
member of a veteran need-
ing help such as under-
standing your benefit enti-
tlements, filling of Veterans
Affairs Canada forms or
navigating the claims and
appeals process with Vet-
erans Affairs Canada, we
are here to assist and guide
you."
Officials encouraged all veterans to
contact their local branch or com-
mand office if they need help.
It is important to realize you do not
have to be a member of the Legion;
the only requirement is that you have
served in the Canadian Armed
Forces.

Ensuring safe roads are an uphill
battle nowadays with distractions of all
sorts causing accidents, injuries and
death.
On March 8, OPP once again
launched a campaign against dis-
tracted driving.
The statistics could be seen as a
motivational factor for the campaign,
with the number of fatal motor vehicle
collisions attributed to distractions
being higher than both the impaired
and speed related deaths this past
year.
Brad Blair, OPP deputy commis-
sioner, said those who experience it
first hand are the most aware of the
escalating issue and how badly the
behaviour needs to stop. The OPP
knows the preventive measures that
must be taken require not only the
public's cooperation, but also their
commitment to raising awareness.
Don Bell, commander of the High-
way Safety Division, said those pledg-
ing not to use their phones should
speak up if another driver is, and
encourage friends and family to not
have distractions while driving.
Huron OPP remind motorists that
starting March 18 the fine for dis-
tracted driving is going from $155 to
$280.
The campaign will continue until
March 18.
