Huron County museum embracing technology
Fox Johnson
QM! Agency
The Huron County museum
explores both bygone eras and
directly involves itself with the
community, and the latest pro-
gram is a taste of modernism
from community member
Selena Hazlitt.
It started on Jan. 20 and con-
tinues until early April. The
FIRST Robotics program is
supported by the company of
the same name, and they hope
to inspire children of all ages
to consider the sciences (tech-
nology, engineering, math) as
job considerations. Both
organizer Hazlitt and assistant
curator Elizabeth French -Gib-
son noted that creative aspects
interests kids: using Lego
building bricks, tapping into
their creative minds, and the
joy of seeing a self -built crea-
tion come to life are examples.
Hazlett said a motivational fac-
tor for bringing this program
to the museum was not only
her interest in the subject, but
also seeing the robotics com-
petition at a Waterloo high
school.
The teens' motivation was
"just heartwarming," she said.

Hazlett wanted to bring the same
experience to the locals. The partici-
pants seem to be in favour of the pro-
gram, with many who were initially
hesitant embracing it after only six
weeks, and not wanting the weekly
program to end so quickly. She is
confident that the smiles she sees on
parents' faces mean they're receptive
of it as well.

Health unit applying for
community challenge funding
Huron County hopes to land fund-
ing to promote healthy lifestyles for
kids.
The Huron County health unit is
spearheading an application to the
Healthy Kids Community Chal-
lenge on behalf of the county.
The new initiative will provide up
to $1 5 million each for 30 communi-
ties in Ontario. The challenge is a
community -led program where part-
ners from different sectors work
together to implement activities to
promote healthy lifestyles.
"This is an exciting opportunity
where communities can work
together to create change and pro-
mote the health of our kids," said
Amy MacDonald, public health dieti-
cian, in a press release.
"We will be working closely with
municipalities and the county."
MacDonald presented the idea to
county council last month and they
endorsed the efforts of the health
unit to move forward. MacDonald
said the application reflects strong
existing partnerships and rural roots.
We are pleased have the support of
our local politicians, which is
important for a strong application."
The focus will be on strategies tar-
geting healthy eating, physical activ-
ity, and adequate sleep. The premise
is that healthy kids become healthy
adults, make healthy citizens, and
healthy economies. The project rec-
ognizes that to be successful chil-
dren, families, schools, and the com-
munities in which they live need to
be targeted. The application must be
submitted by early this month.
For questions about the applica-
tion or partner involvement, contact
the health unit at 519-482-3416 or
1-877-837-6143.

to remind us to sample well water at
minimum three times a year, including
winter or before taking solace at a

Public health inspector Patrick Lan-
dry said: "Water that has an odour, is

Though the county has maintained a
reputation for clean water, Landry said
that some people take that luxury for
granted, and regardless of the water
quality it should be tested to ensure
safety.
Water sample kits are available to be
picked up or dropped off at five areas:
at the health unit near Clinton, South
Huron Hospital in Exeter, Seaforth Hos-
