A Grade 12 student from Central
Huron Secondary School is slated to
head to India later this year to continue
her work to help better the lives of
others.
Farren Goos of Seaforth is currently
fundraising to participate in her second
Me to We leadership trip.
Last summer, Goos was one of 28 stu-
dents who traveled to Olorte, Kenya as
part of a volunteer trip.
Goos spoke to members of the Sea -
forth Lions Club on Feb. 24 about her
trip.
"This community will hold a part in
my heart for a lifetime," Goos said.
Goos said when the group arrived in
town, over 500 children ran out from
the local school to greet them.
"It was so amazing to see how happy
and inspiring these kids were," she
added.
The students were helping to build a
school in the town, but Goos said the
experience was just as much about
learning what it is like to live without
the advantages many people in the First
World have.
They slept in tents, as well as using a
washroom that consisted of a tent with
a seat above a hole in the ground.
They were required at times to eat the
same meals the locals would, which she
said consisted of a breakfast of a por-
ridge -like meal, but "more watery',left-
overs of which were then cooked hard
and served for dinner.
Goos also received a first hand look
at many of the hardships Kenyans have
to go through for the things many Cana-
dians take for granted, such as water
and food.
"The experience of walking six miles
for water was something I'll never for-
get," she said.
According to Goos, many families in
Kenya only spend about $6 a week on
food, sometimes feeding as many as 15
people.

Overall, Goos said it was a very fulfill-
ing experience.
"Seeing the difference between our
cultures was very rewarding and inspir-
ing," she said.
Goos said she was first drawn to Me
to We in public school when she had
the opportunity to attend the annual
We D ay.
Due to her positive attitude and hard work in
Kenya, Goos said she received an invitation to take
part in the trip to India.
The cost of the trip is $5,000.
She said she has raised about $1,000 so far and
is brainstorming other ways to garner support.
She asked members of the Lions Club if they
would consider supporting her cause.
Members said they were very impressed by her
presentation.
"We are glad to have youth like you representing
our country on the international scale," said Lions
Club member Paul Stephen.
