A new business in Downtown Brussels is playing a part in Huron County's cultural scene.
CanadianBreed Custom Electrics held an open house at their new location on June 22. More than
just a music store, Bill Scheltema designs and constructs guitars which have been recognized both
nationally and internationally.

Outdoor concerts in
Harbour Park, Goderich
Hayley Linfield
Special to the Expositor
Sunday, June 22
marked the beginning of
the Harbour Lions Park
Summer Concert Series
sponsored by the Goder-
ich Laketown Band.
This week brings the
amazing Lighthouse
Swing Band.
The Outdoor Summer
Concert Series has been
a part of Goderich since
the summer of 1970
when then -band presi-
dent Don McMillan
approached the town
council to ask if they'd be
able to provide the band
with some kind of struc-
ture in Harbour Park.
Town councillor Reg
Jewel thought about it for
awhile and remembered
that years earlier, at the
corner of West Street and
Waterloo Street there had
been a natural ice arena,
and in the summer they
used to have wrestling
matches there.
Reg told Don that the
old wrestling ring was
still in storage, and won-
dered if that would work
as a bandstand. Don said
it would. They set the
wrestling ring up in Har-
bour Park in the same
place where the band-
stand currently sits.
At the time, one of the
band's trombonist's was
Harold Jeffery (of Jeffery
& Son) and he built a
back and a collapsible
roof onto the ring to pro-
tect the band from wind
and rain. They used the
wrestling ring for about
five years and the con-
certs were immensely
popular, so popular that
the Lion's Club offered to
build the band a new
bandstand.
These concerts have
been running every Sun-
day evening for over 40
summers. As a child in
the 1980s, I recall many
times playing down at
the beach and hearing
the strains of live music
start up, wafting down
from above.
My sister and I would
know that the evening
had come and if we
climbed the hill to Har-
bour Park we would be
able to find our parents
or grandparents there.
Sometimes we'd sit on
the grass and listen
alongside the adults, or
else we'd run about and
play on the swings or
climber while the band
played.
These outdoor con-
certs are part of what
makes Goderich a fabu-
lous place to be in the
summer and, along with
our beaches and cream
puffs from Culbert's bak-
ery, are an integral part of
what makes up our
town's fabric. Listening
to live music outside is a
great experience, but
these concerts can't hap-
pen without you, the
audience. Please come
out with your friends and
children and support a
community tradition.
From now until the
end of the summer you
can enjoy live music
every Sunday evening.
Bring your lawn chair
and your friends this
Sunday, June 29 and
enjoy the music of The
Lighthouse Swing Band.
(Check out the website of
the Laketown Band for a
complete list of summer
bands.) All concerts start
at 7:00 p.m. and end as
the sun sets. There is no
fee, just a goodwill
donation.
