In the wake of the
recent provincial elec-
tion, Huron -Bruce MPP
Lisa Thompson is wor-
ried about the province's
future.
Thompson said one of
her biggest worries is the
cost of living in Ontario.
With the cost of living on
the rise, she worries resi-
dents won't be able to
afford living in the
province.
On the Liberals getting
the majority vote,
Thompson said they have
more than doubled
Ontario's debt over the
last 11 years. She said a
lot of Ontarians under-
stand the state of our
financial affairs and she
hopes the Liberals will
help to fix the serious fis-
cal situation that the
province is facing.
"They [the Liberals]
now own it for the next
four years," Thompson
said. "I'm very curious to
see how they will go for-
ward, it'll be interesting
to see what happens"
Thompson also com-
mented on Tim Hudak's
resignation as party
leader. She said as a PC
party, they need to listen
and they need to figure
out the best ways to posi-
tively move forward.
She doesn't see herself
running for the leader-
ship of the party any time
soon.
Thompson said her
main focus at the
moment is Huron -Bruce.
She wants Huron -Bruce
to know, as a riding, that
they have her utmost
commitment and that
they are her number 1
priority.
She also wants to dem-
onstrate that the PC party
absolutely understands
where the electorate is at
currently.
Despite the election
results and the resigna-
tion of Hudak, Thomp-
son looks forward to the
future.
She said there will be a
focus on balancing the
budget and making sure
the government owns up
to the debt issues.
There will also be a
focus on energy as well as
attracting jobs, Thomp-
son said Ontario's main
export is its young people
and that a stop needs to
be put to that. She wants
to demonstrate that there
Representatives from
Vanastra Recreation Centre
request financial support
Dave Flaherty
For the Expositor
Central Huron has
received a request for
financial assistance for
the Vanastra Recreation
Centre.
Huron East councillor
Les Falconer, who is also
a member of centre com-
mittee, made the request
at the June 16 meeting.
Approximately
$385,000 in renovations
had been identified for
the centre.
Huron East has com-
mitted $200,000, while a
$35,000 Ontario Trillium
Foundation grant has
been received as well.
A fundraising commit-
tee has raised $15,000 of
its $150,000 goal as well.
The first two stages of
the renovations have
been completed, includ-
ing fitting the building for
wheelchair access and
installing slip -proof
flooring.
Facility manager Lissa
Berard told councillors
that they have a wide
variety of programming.
Particular highlights
are activities for young
children and people who
have suffered from
strokes or have knee and
high replacements.
Also, all the area life-
guards are trained at the
Vanastra Recreation
Centre.
Even though the centre
is located in Huron East,
Berard said many resi-
dents in Central Huron
partake in activites there.
"It's a treasured asset
not only in Huron East,
but in other communities
as well," she said.
Falconer asked for
financial assistance
between $5,000 to
$10,000.
Coun. Alison Lobb
asked if Huron East had
provided financial sup-
port when the Clinton
arena was built.
Falconer said they did
not but noted there are a
lot of Central Huron resi-
dents who use the Vanas-
tra Recreation Centre.
The 2012 User Report
for the centre indicated
that 32 per cent of the
households that take part
in programming at the
centre are from Central
Huron.
Municipal staff will
present a report on the
request at a future coun-
cil meeting.
are good paying jobs within the
province.
"It'll be interesting," Thompson
said when asked her opinion on
how the results of the election will
affect the PCs within the legislature.
"We'll be identifying a new leader
and in eight to 12 months time,
you'll be seeing our party start to get
more excited and reach out."
