Little voices, big ideas Whitney South Huron Expositor A certain class at Seaforth Public School is proving you're never too young to take an interest in your community. As part of a social studies unit, Mrs. Jones' Grade 1 and 2 class took a look at what being a community means, as well as how they as chil- dren, and their families, can lend a helping hand. "We went for walks all around our neighbourhood and took lots of pictures," said Jones, adding the focus was not only on man-made structures, but also the natu- ral environment. "We thought about why our com- munity is important and how we can start to make it better." In addition to studying the community around them, Jones asked her students to brainstorm some ideas about how they could improve, or add to, the town. "It was all about what we would like to see in Seaforth and what they could come up with," she said. Writing down their ideas and adding pictures, the class got a chance to share their ideas with Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan during a special presentation on June 19. While some groups sug- gested additions such as a hotel, Barbie playhouse and even a petting zoo, class con- sensus seemed to support the addition of a town splash pad with 12 out of 21 stu- dents hoping for a new spot to play. "That's pretty important," said MacLellan, adding he would take the idea back to council on behalf of the stu- dents. "It sounds like a lot of you guys really want this." The mayor told the stu- dents putting in a splash pad isn't as easy as they may think, since there are several factors that go into council making such a big decision, which would include fund- ing and maintenance. MacLellan said he was impressed by the class's overall presentation and hard work "You all did such a great job," he smiled. "Council always appreciates when people come to us with great ideas and you're all more than welcome to come for a visit anytime."
