Opening up our homes
and our eyes
Steve Howe
Special to the Expositor
Our International team is
now on the road looking for
new host families to provide
a home away from home for
our international students
coming in September. We
are expecting over 120 stu-
dents from around the world
to attend Avon Maitland
schools in Huron and Perth
Counties for the 2014-2015
school year.
We will have short term,
one semester and full year
students coming from coun-
tries like Spain, Brazil, Mex-
ico, Germany, Japan, China
and even Australia. Hosting
an international student is a
rewarding experience for
you and your family and of
course a once in a lifetime
experience for your interna-
tional guest.
Most of these students are
coming to Canada for the
very first time and many
travelling beyond their home
for the first time.
Canada, and in particular
Ontario, has an impressive
reputation around the world
for the quality of our educa-
tion. Thousands of students
from every corner of the
earth look to Canada each
year for a great education, a
new cultural experience and
to improve their English lan-
guage skills. The numbers
continue to grow every year.

We began promoting our
schools not too long ago, in
the fall of 2011. Since that
time we have truly become a
destination of choice. In our
first year we attracted 29 stu-
dents. We followed that with
88 students this year and we
are on target to grow by as
much as 40 per cent for the
2014-2015 school year.
This benefits our
schools and communities
in many ways. It creates a
more diverse population
providing our students
with a more global per-
spective. It allows the
Board to maintain many
course offerings that
might have been in jeop-
ardy because of declining
enrolment. It also saves
valuable jobs in our
schools and in some cases
creates new employment
opportunities. It also con-
tributes to the local econ-
omy because these are
fee -paying students, who
also pay for home stay ser-
vices and bring along their
own personal spending
money. 100 full-time equiv-
alent students would inject
more that over $2 million
into our local economy. Now
with this growth, there are
challenges. We need more
active families across Huron
and Perth to provide a home
away from home for our
international guests. The
experience is priceless and
host families are compen-
sated. Contact us today to
find out how it all works,
how you and your family can
benefit and how your partici-
pation will help our schools.
We have representatives in
all regions of our district who
will visit with you and
answer all of your questions.

school news
Claire Gordon
Minister of Public Relations
This past Wednesday
marked the beginning of
quiet week at St. Anne's.
Staff and students are
now busy preparing for
second semester exams.
Exams start on Wednes-
day, June 18, with period
one exams in the
afternoon.
Thursday second period
exams are also in the after-
noon and Friday's third
period exams are in the
morning.
The school year ends on
the following Monday,
with fourth period exams
in the morning. Good luck
to all of the students writ-
ing exams.
Then it is officially the
start of summer vacation
for the students.
Report cards will be
available in the office for
pick up July 1 to 3. Gradu-
ating students have their
annual graduation break-
fast and commencement
practice the morning of
June 26, with commence-
ment following that night
at 6:58 p.m.
The Grade 11 students
participated in the annual
Temple Tour, where they
traveled to different places
of worship to learn more
about world religions. The
day was a great experience
and learning opportunity
for all of the students.
Monday was the annual
track and field meet for the
elementary schools. Over-
all the students had lots of
fun and it was a beautiful
day to be outside.
This week the Grade 9s
who had math in second
semester also completed
their Math EQAO.
The Grade 12s also had
their retreat this past week.
The students got to partici-
pate in fun games and
activities in the morning,
followed by a catered
lunch and community
building activities at the
beach in afternoon. The
retreat was a great time for
all of the students and it
was an awesome chance
for all the Grade 12 stu-
dents to be together before
they graduate.
We wish everyone all the
best on their final exams.
Horticultural Society

Glenyce Kelly
Seaforth Horticultural Society
Seaforth and District Hor-
ticultural Society had the
pleasure of touring three
absolutely beautiful gardens
on the evening of June 11.
Mother Nature turned off the
rain drops just in time for the
group to have a lovely stroll
through gorgeous land-
scapes. The colours in the
garden are so amazing this
time of year; with iris; peo-
nies and columbine (to
name just a few) in full
bloom, who can resist a walk
through the garden?
Thank you to Carol Rein -
ink of Sunset Springs,
Monique Baan of Walton
and Shirley Koch of River -
bend Gardens for such a
beautiful tour.
Next month, July 9, we will
be hopping on a bus and
heading to Whistling Gar-
dens in Brantford, as well as
exploring Paris. If you are
interested in joining this tour
be sure to give Heather a call
at 519-527-1832 to reserve
your seat.
Our August meeting will
also be enjoyed in the gar-
den. We will meet at North-
side Church on Aug. 13 at
5:45 p.m. to carpool.
Keep checking our web-
site, www.seaforthdhs.org,
for further details.
Our community is burst-
ing with colour now that the
hanging baskets and planter
boxes have been put in
place. We are very grateful to
all those who have lent a
helping hand, and shovel, in
keeping our community
beautiful.
Enjoy the flowers.
