Relay for Life in Goderich returns June 20 and June 21 at the GDCI track. Laura Pethick, fundraising coordina- tor for the Huron -Perth branch of the Canadian Cancer Society said since the event's inception in Goderich in 2003, $962,779 has been raised here. Pethick said this could very well be the "$1 million year" for the Goderich event. As of last week there were 12 teams registered, with a goal of 13. However, Pethick explained there are many people in Goderich who attend Relay for Life and make a donation even if they aren't a member of a team. Even though collecting donations is a huge priority at Relay for Life, Pethick said, "it's more than just a fundraiser, people can walk with pride and pay tribute to loved ones or honour someone who is currently going through their battle. There is a huge emotional component to Relay for Life you cannot get from another fundraiser' "It shows people they are not alone in their journey and we are fighting back against cancer," she added. Things kick off with a survivor recep- tion from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., where can- cer survivors are invited to socialize, have some refreshments and grab a bite to eat. At 7 p.m., the survivor lap begins. "Whether someone has had cancer for a day or 10 years, they are welcome to walk," she said. The luminary ceremony will take place at 10 p.m. - lanterns whose flames are in honour of those battling cancer and in memory of those who succumbed to that fight. Luminaries can be purchased at the event or beforehand online at relayfor- life.ca/huroncounty. This year's event has a sports theme, where participants and supporters have been encouraged to dress wearing the colours of their favourite team(s) and to decorate their tent areas as well. There are plenty of other activities planned for the evening. New this year include a "sports fan" lap where participants are encouraged to wear their favourite jersey, a wheel lap, a "glow in the dark" lap, lap poker and scrabble lap, a three-legged race and "redneck" relay, a "Simon says" lap and a PJ fashion show for children. There will also be a lap dedicated to Canadian Cancer Society drivers who take cancer patients to their appointments. Entertainment will be provided by Bud Mabon, Jennifer Raeburn and Kat- rina Bos, Peyton Reign, Carry On Clog- gers, Celtae Lynne, Curtis, The Affair and Robb Hill. There will be two rounds of zumba throughout the night and also lap bead necklaces for sale where participants are given a bead for every lap they complete. Pethick said its not too late to register a team (they even take registration on site) and invited anyone interested to come out and support the event.
