The tournament has been an annual event for the Van Dyk fam- ily, in memory of their relative Nick, who lost his battle with can- cer when he was just 19 years old. Held at the Van Dyk farm just outside Seaforth, family and friends spent the day enjoying Nick's favourite game, which was usually played at annual family get-togethers. Tracy Rossetti, event organizer, said the day was not only about remembering Nick, but also about creating an atmosphere where people could really connect with family and friends. "These are the days and moments that mean the most when we can come together and just have a good time," she explained. "But, we're also here to help build a better tomorrow, which means a future that's cancer -free. We're looking to be the destination beyond cancer." What started out as a one-year event has become an annual tra- dition in the Seaforth community. "We were so amazed by all the support the first year, we're just so thankful to everyone that six years later they're still support- ing us the way they are," said Tracy, adding the event has helped raise over $150,000 for Sears National Kids Cancer Ride in its first five years. "The expres- sion of support our family feels from this has just been phenomenal." The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride funds programs that improve the lives of children living with cancer, as well as those recovering from the physical and emotional scars that can be part of Whitney South, Huron Expositor survivorship. Beyond the children themselves, their families and friends benefit from on-going sup- port programs. For Ken and Margaret Van Dyk, seeing so many people come out each year to remember their son is always an amazing experience. "It's a beautiful day for a great cause," said Margaret. "Nick would've been thrilled. He loved his cousins, he loved his big family, and for them to still do it after all these years is so special."
