Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb announced last week that the board would be the recipient of $228,000 from the federal govern- ment's Skills Link program. According to a release from Lobb's office, "Skill Link helps youth facing barriers to employment - including youth are single parents, youth with disa- bilities, young new Cana- dians and youth in rural and remote areas - to gain the experience needed to find a job or the confi- dence to return to school." AMDSB's Reach for Suc- cess program is aimed at teens and young people in Huron County between the ages of 15 and 30, who are out of school and in need of assistance to gain workplace skills and experience. Susan McKee, adminis- trator of lifelong learning programs with AMDSB said there are two parts to the program; four weeks of workshops at The Centre for Employment and Learning in Clin- ton and eights weeks of employment with local employers through the county. Participants in the program are paid the equivalent of provincial minimum wage for both portions of the program. Employers receive wage imburse- ment for participating in the program. We know that our youth are leaving the community and the rate of unem- ployment in the county is less than 4%. We also know there's a mismatch between the skills of many jobseekers and skills required for local employers. The funding was made through the federal government's Skills Link program. Paa miry Coa)irion, Pa r le° Strong Families... Strong Ontario On June 12 VOTE ANDREW ZETTEL Huron Bruce www.familycoalitionparty.com Authorized by the Official Agent for the Andrew Zettel FCP Campaign vides an opportunity for youth to develop the employability skills that employers are looking for in the work- place," she said. "The program also explores the essential skills that are required for success in specific jobs. The beauty of the program is the fact the youth have an opportunity to apply the skills in an actual work environ- ment for eight weeks. The youth have a chance to learn from local employers and employers have a chance to work with potential employers!' Lobb said the program takes on "leave no one behind" concept and allows people to get second chances. He said it could also lead to savings for taxpayers because it can reduce the number of people on Ontario Works. The next sessions of the Reach for Success program are June 30 and Sep- tember 22. Those interested in the program can contact Renee Chauvin at 519-482- 1700 or e-mail their resume to rene- chau@fc.amdsb.ca.
