Heading into its 35th year,
the Ontario Agricultural Hall
of Fame (OAHF) is once
again ready to welcome a
new crop of inductees on
June 8.
Huron East's Art Bolton is
among those set to be hon-
oured this week at a cere-
mony in Milton.
"It's a great honour, there's
no doubt about it," he said of
the induction. "It's great to
be included with a lot of spe-
cial people in agriculture"
To qualify for recognition,
inductees must have demon-
strated visionary leadership,
innovation and entrepre-
neurship in the advance-
ment of agriculture in
Ontario and will have left a
lasting legacy for the benefit
of future generations.
Qualifications Bolton has
acquired in spades.
Starting out as a "Select"
pedigreed seed producer in
1966, Bolton built a reputa-
tion as an expert in the com-
plexities of the regulations
and procedures for growing
and processing seed crops.
Along with his son Carl, he
has carried on that business,
even receiving the Long Ser-
vice Certificate from the
Canadian Seed Growers
Association in 2010.
Described by his nomina-
tors as a visionary in the
accreditation and develop-
ment of the seed industry in
Ontario and Canada, Bol-
ton's resume not only boasts
a long list of accomplish-
ments, but reads as a history
of a true leader of the
community.
Huron East Council hon-
oured Bolton with a presen-
tation at their meeting on
May 20, recognizing not only
his election, but also his
many achievements with the
Seaforth Agricultural Society
and the McKillop School
Board.
"One of the things I
noticed about the induction
write up for the Hall of Fame
was, it didn't include very
much in the way of what
happened locally," Bolton
told council, adding how
honoured he was to be
acknowledged by his the
community where he got his
start. "Gentlemen, it really is
an honour:'
Deputy Mayor Joe Steffler
told council it would proba-
bly take less time to list the
things Bolton hadn't done
for the community, than the
things he had.
"As long as I have known
him, Art is a true leader in
our community," he said.
Mayor Bernie MacLellan
shared that, although he
wasn't a farmer himself, he
couldn't help but be
impressed at all Bolton had
accomplished in his many
years.
"Congratulations, on
behalf of Huron East, on your
contribution to the farming
industry," he said. "This is
definitely the heart of farm-
ing in Ontario."
With a long list of accom-
plishments, including a dec-
ade on the Ontario Crop
Insurance Commission, as
well as 30 years of service on
Whitney South, Huron Expositor
Huron East's Art Bolton is set to be inducted into the
Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame thanks to his countless
contributions to agricultural advancements not only
locally, but Canada -wide. The ceremony will take place
June 8 in Milton.
-471
the Ontario Pulse Commit-
tee, Bolton has done much to
ensure agricultural industry
continues to advance in
Ontario, as well as across the
country.
In 2012, he was even
awarded the Queen Eliza-
beth II Diamond Jubilee
Award for his contributions
to Canadian agriculture and
to the development of young
farmers.
Rounding out the list of
this year's nominees are
Robert Hutton, formerly of
St. Mary's; Dr. Gord Sur-
geoner of Fergus and George
Arnold of Bobcaygeon.
The OAHF was
incorporated in 1979 as a
non-profit association under
the Corporations Act of
Ontario. The Hall of Fame
opened in 1980, with the
induction of nine pioneer
agriculturists who repre-
sented more than 100 years
of combined efforts and ini-
tiatives in building a better
agriculture for the province.
Currently, 199 individuals
have been honoured with
induction.
