Having recently returned
from a volunteer mission trip
to India, Farren Goos is seeing
things in a whole new way.
"There's so much waste
here and we don't really think
about it," she explained. "It's
important to try and change
to way we look at things."
This was the CHSS graduate's
second trip abroad with Me to
We, an organization which
encourages young people to
live a socially responsible life,
even offering trips to lend a
hand in developing nations.
Farren said she first leamed
about Me to We in public
school when she had the
chance to participate in We day.
"When I was in public
school I went and there was a
little bit of Me to We stuff and I
really loved it," she said.
According to the organiza-
tion's website, Me to We pro-
vides people with better
choices for a better world,
including socially conscious
and environmentally friendly
clothes and accessories, as
well as life -changing interna-
tional volunteer trips, leader-
ship training programs and
materials, an inspirational

speakers' bureau, and books
that address issues of positive
social change.
Deciding to travel to India
with Me to We wasn't a hard
choice.

I was really motivated by that

trip and really wanted to do it
again," said Farren, adding she
was asked attend based on the
previous year's leadership her
facilitator had observed.
The group, which included
students from all over Canada,
flew through Brussels into
Delhi, where they got a
chance to see one of India's
largest cities.
"We were in there for three
days. We went to the market
and other touristy things, the
city was crazy to see, it was a
big culture shock," Farren
explained, adding though
some of her fellow travellors
were a little overwhelmed by
the experience, she couldn't
help but savour it. "I thought,
live in the moment, there
might be a lot of people and a
lot of motorbike horns, but
you'll never be in India again:'
Their final destination
would be a small community,
two hours outside the city of
Hdaipur in Western India.
With Me to We, volunteers
aren't told exactly what they'll
be doing before they arrive at
their destination.
"We ended up going to a
community that had just
gotten a new school from
Free the Children, so we did
a bunch of smaller things for
them," Farren explained,
adding some of those little
things involved digging out a
septic tank and building
walls around the school for
student safety. "The whole
experience was just so
rewarding, I just want to
keep doing it."
For Farren, this trip of a
lifetime wouldn't have been
possible without the gener-
ocity of the people in her
community. "I just want eve-
ryone to know how grateful I
am for anyone who helped
me get there and no matter
what they donated, whether
it was buying a bracelet, or
the donation from the Sea -
forth Lions Club, everything
counts and it meant a lot."
