New street sweeper Seaforth Golf Club welcomes
heading to Huron East Country Classic Aug. 1 to 3
Whitney South
Huron East Council will be getting a
new street sweeper, a topic of debate for
quite some time. The new vehicle,
which is to be purchased from Joe John-
son Equipment, is a 2014 Broom Badger
mechanical street sweeper, will cost the
municipality $186,725.
Council approved the purchase at its
July 8th meeting, but it did not pass
without its share of controversy.
Coun. Larry McGrath once again
voiced his opposition of the new
sweeper, saying he would've preferred
to see council go with a used
machine, saving the municipality
around $30,000.
He went on to add Huron East
couldn't possibly be using the sweeper
24 hours a day, as previously stated, but
only around 300 hours per year. The
previously used machine had only been
operated for around 900 hours.
Director of Public Works, Barry
Mills, said since the municipality had
set aside $200,000 in the budget for
the purchase, the new sweeper was
well within Huron East's means.
A request for LED street lighting has
been approved for installation in 10 of
the municipality's 13 lighting systems.
The new lights would save the munic-
ipality over 60 per cent in energy costs,
not to mention up to 80 per cent in
maintenance.
Huron East currently sees an annual
cost of $128,992 in lighting.
Council approved a motion to start
the request for proposal process during
its July 8 meeting.
LET'S ALL DO OUR PART!
