Coffee Break is the largest annual fundraising cam- paign of the Alzheimer Soci- ety that raises money locally for hands-on programs and services offered by Alzhei- mer Societies in over 150 communities across Canada. A new and exciting partner- ship is perking this fund- raiser up in Huron County. Coastal Coffee Company, located in Zurich, has part- nered with Alzheimer Huron to offer hosts Coastal Cof- fee's locally roasted, freshly ground, delicious coffee in their host kits. As an added bonus, all those who sign up to host a Coffee Break before July 31 will be entered into the grand prize draw for train travel for two from Stratford to Ottawa, courtesy of VIA Rail. Anyone can take part in this do-it-yourself fundraiser by making a donation in exchange for a cup of coffee. It can be as simple as hosting a coffee party at home, in the office or a public venue. With such fantastic commu- nity support each year Cof- fee Break grows in Huron County, last year raising over $18,000. "Increased funding for services is essential to meet the needs of the growing numbers of people with dementia in Huron," says Cathy Ritsema executive director of Alzheimer Society of Huron County. "The Ris- ing Tide is upon us and it is my hope that the people of Huron County will rally together and ride this wave with us to support our efforts by hosting a Coffee Break. It's simple, fun and it brings people together to pay it for- ward for a great cause." Coffee Break is a great way to support family, neighbours & friends who are currently living with, or caring for someone, with dementia. It's a simple way to show your support, often- times, hosts will put a pot of coffee on at an event, com- munity meeting or in a staff room. People are usually very happy to contribute when they see the personal connection people have with Alzheimer's and dementia locally. The number of peo- ple affected locally increases each year, which means an increase for family caregiv- ers giving hundreds of hours of unpaid care, ultimately leading to higher levels of stress and other health- related conditions. "Support groups for car- egivers will be in even greater demand," says Jenn Burns, first link/support ser- vices coordinator at Alzhei- mer Huron. "They're a safe place for caregivers to talk, share and form friendships, giving them the confidence and strength to continue caring for family members at home for longer. But to keep these groups active, we need more funding. We're encour- aging everyone in Huron to get behind our Coffee Break appeal." Coffee Break kicks off this September, but participants can host events throughout the month and up until Christmas time. Alzheimer Huron has a new presence at the Central Huron Farmer's Market, where they are serv- ing Coastal Coffee for a donation every Wednesday. You can also purchase bags of Medium Roast Coastal Coffee, where a portion of each bag sold will support the Society. These can be purchased at the Society office, located directly behind One Care on Hwy 8 headed west, at the Farmer's Market on Wednesdays or via the website with the online order form.
