A team of students from the University of Guelph toured the village of Vanastra to get a sense of the area,
what they found was inspiration from the community.
Capacity Development background to the project,"
he said, explaining he attempted to remind him-
self and the group often that planning is a living,
breathing process and that rigidity can often do
more harm than good. "We found ourselves want-
ing to write a report that resonated with the com-
munity - not too simple that it didn't excite, and
not too lofty that it was too much to absorb!'
In the end, it was meeting the residents and
business owners of Vanastra that helped Brown
find inspiration for the project.
"My first impression of Vanastra was that it had
a lot of potential," he said. "We met a vibrant group
of excited people who invited us to be excited with
them."
The group presented their report to the Village
of Vanastra Revival Team at the Seaforth Golf Club
on Dec. 4. Outlining suggested changes such as
more prominent road signage and an increased
online presence, it was easy to see the students
had turned an interest in Vanastra into a full-
blown passion.
"The Village of Vanastra is a community unlike
any other in Ontario with a rich and exciting his-
tory," the group stated in their final report. "Some
may look at Vanastra and see derelict buildings, a
checkered past and an uncertain future, while oth-
ers may envision a model community, established
at a time when its contribution to the world
changed the course of history. We wish you the
very best as you work towards whichever future
vision you choose to embrace."

A prominent suggestion from the group was for Vanastra to catch peoples' attention
from the highway, encouraging motorists to enter the area with more prominent
signage.
For Hawley, Vanastra's revitalization
has become more than just a labour of
love.
"Building up Vanastra is a great future
investment for not only its residents, but
for Huron East as well," she said. "Having
a strategic plan moving forward is
essential and should open some doors
for possible funding in the future. Now
to roll up our sleeves and get to work."
