A failure to communicate
Family, community, faith, school - teens are
going to take their cues from these groups
long before the federal government.
Justice Minister Peter MacKay announced a new
campaign on Jan. 9, called Stop Hating Online.
The focus is a public service announcement video
to be aired on television and online.
The PSA begins with shots of youth sharing an
unseen file via cellphone and laptop. Sombre music
plays in the background.
Then a voiceover states: "Let your kids know in
some cases what they do with their phones could be
more than just wrong. It could be illegal."
At the end we see the youth in the principal's
office, a police officer standing in front of them.
The viewer is directed to learn more at Canada.ca/

This PSA doesn't say much. It just tells kids to be
afraid that whatever they're doing online might be
illegal.
With all the headlines about NSA spying, to make
an ad as vague as this was a strange move.
If it's supposed to educate youth about the newly
proposed law making the distribution of intimate
images without consent a crime, then just say it.
But if that's the case, why have an ad campaign for
a law that isn't on the books yet?
May we add, this campaign cost $4 million.
Government is notoriously slow to respond to
events. Various media that have a greater impact on
today's youth have been more effectively discussing
the issue for a long time.
Back in October 2011, Conservative MPs even put
together an "it gets better" video, imploring teens -
particularly gay teens - to not be hasty in dealing
with the pains of youth. Don't make any rash
actions, was the message, because life really does
get better.
This didn't seem to take long and it certainly
didn't cost a lot of money.
The website is also full of the type of sanitized lan-
guage you'd expect from the government. It doesn't
speak to kids on their own level.
Online bullying is clearly a problem right now. It
makes sense for politicians with an ear to the
ground to care.
But at the end of the day, change is going to come
from the immediate community.

A little magic
goes a long way
people never cease to
amaze me.
Specifically, the
people of Seaforth and Huron
East.
It's a community like no other
I've ever been lucky enough to
be a part of.
Folks around
here continue to
surprise me with
their ability to
make great things
happen, and
what's more, their
absolute passion
for helping others.
Most recently, I
had the pleasure
of attending the Disney
Breakfast Fundraiser for the
Duffy family at the Seaforth
Community Centre on Jan. 19.
Now, I've been to my fair
share of events, some large,
some small, but all with big
intensions.
And honestly, there's nothing
more heartbreaking than
heading out to something you
know is worthwhile, only to find
everyone else couldn't find the
time to show up.
On that note, I was nothing
short of elated to see this was
not the case Sunday, my
pessimism fading quickly as I
was greeted by a packed
parking lot.
Pulling into a spot on the
street, I trekked through the
snow, cautiously optimistic
about the caliber of event that
would greet me.
When I finally walked up to
the community centre, I was
immediately struck by the
massive line stretching out the
front doors.
Braving the harsh
temperatures, dozens of people
smiled and laughed with each
other, every one eager to show
the Duffy family their love and
support.
Inside, the scene was nothing
short of remarkable.
Colourful balloons floated
high above brightly
decorated tables,
while costumed
characters, young
and old, milled
throughout the
crowd.

White to
Tinkerbell, Donald
Duck to the Big
Bad Wolf, everyone
was there; even Mickey Mouse
himself.
Some took photos while
others shook hands with kids
and parents; it was hard to tell
who was enjoying themselves
more.
But through all of the chatter
going on that day, the most
common conversations I
overheard were about Tom and
Mandy themselves; what
wonderful people they were,
and what an honour it was to be
able to give them a hand in
their time of need.
For a family going through
such a difficult time, it had to be
a great feeling to know so many
people from your community
are behind you, in their wishes
and prayers.
Though I have never had the
pleasure of meeting Tom and
Mandy personally, I hope they
realize how much the people of
Seaforth love and care for them.
And if a community as small
as this can make such a big
difference in one family's life,
there's just no limit to what they
can do.
