That's the kind of positive impact local author Linda Reis is sharing with readers in her new book 'Less is More published last June. The book is inspired by Reis's own strug- gles with anxiety and depression over the years, and provides readers messages of inspiration and poems of healing. "One of the things I remember thinking of at the time is less garbage inside means more light," said Reis referring to the book's title. "Sometimes the less busy you are, the more life you can have or the more you can experience life. It's a small book but there's a lot packed into a little:' Reis grew up in Logan Township and has lived with an anxiety disorder for much of her life. She worked as an insur- ance broker in Ontario until she retired in 1998, with the intention of starting a new career. Her health however, took a turn and today Reis now lives with what is known as mixed anxiety -depressive disorder. She became interested in meditation and journaling several years ago around the turn of the new millennium in 2000 and for over a decade has written dozens of poems and journal entries that eventu- ally lead to her first book 'Less is More: "I don't consider myself a writer, but my hope is that if someone is having a difficult time - either they're dealing with depres- sion, or maybe they've lost their job, their marriage is broken or like us, one of the partners has cancer - that they could have this book and it gives them just something to hold onto," said Reis, noting her hus- band was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. The book features several encouraging and thought provoking poems and inspi- rational messages that come from the heart. "It's just God reminding me that I'm always there for On days that are difficult, it's then that she discovers what being a human being is all about, she says. "It's not just about the surface things that we think about like having a career or having a family, but it's our spiritual growth as well. "I want people to be able to find com- fort and maybe direction or maybe they need some peace in their life," said Reis. "I hope it will help people - if they're going through cancer, if they're dealing with depression or if they just hit a really rocky spot in their life:' One hundred copies of the book 'Less is More' have been printed and already 30 have been sold. Several of them have also been gifted to various organizations and charities in the Mitchell and Stratford areas, including the Canadian Mental Health Asso- ciation's lending library in Stratford. Andy Bader Mitchell Advocate Local author Linda Reis recently published her first book, 'Less is More' last June. The book was inspired by Reis's own struggles with anxiety and depression over the years, and offers readers inspirational messages and poems of healing. "Some of these poems that are in the book have come out of my joumaling. I might sit down to journal how I'm feeling that day and I just get a feeling that there's something else. I just let the words flow into my pen," she said. "I set my thoughts on the back shelf and I've learned to just let go and this comes out:' Reis said the book, as life often is, has been a spiritual journey of healing and dis- covery about both herself and about life. Many of the poems and messages in the book have come from Reis's own situa- tions and experiences. While it can be difficult living with anxi- ety and depression, Reis hopes the book will resonate with many readers, and that they too will find comfort in its pages. Myles Krahn The junior boys basketball Phoenix played evenly with their SHDHS hosts for most of the game, but, having given up an early lead, found it tough to close the gap as the game went on. Strong rebounding and active defense kept the score as close as it could be, but turnovers had, again, cost the Phoenix early in the game. Mike Watterworth and Lucas Godkin led the scoring with 12 each, Myles Krahn added 4, Brad Watson had 2, and Kristopher Sepers added 1. The next game for the boys will take place on Jan. 8, when they visit LDSS.
