Thousands from the shores of Lake Huron east to Kingston remained without power fol- lowing an ice storm that blew across Ontario the evening of Dec. 21. In a release at 3 a.m., Toronto Hydro said 254,000 customers remained in the dark. "Tree damage is extensive and worse than originally anticipated. It is slowing down the pace of restoration," the release said. Some Toronto media outlets reported it could be Christmas Day, or later, before power is fully restored to area residents. In New Brunswick, about 7,200 customers were without power Monday morning. The freezing rainstorm that hit Saturday night and Sunday morning walloped much of southern and eastern Ontario, southern Que- bec, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. It reached Nova Scotia later on Sunday and a freezing ram warning continued for much of the Maritimes early Monday morning. After the storm passed through areas, subsequent winds felled even more trees and with them more power lines. Cities and towns along the Lake Ontario shoreline took the brunt of the storm. Sunday afternoon, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne offered the "full support" of the prov- ince to affected communities and Prime Minis- ter Stephen Harper tweeted, "Thoughts are with those without power due to the ice storm - please stay safe Ontario Provincial Police and other agencies were advising people not to venture outdoors unless absolutely necessary.
