Looby president enters Road Builder's hall of fame
Stan Connelly
began as a
co-op student
The president of a Dublin
firm was recently inducted
into the Road Building Hall of
Fame recently.
Stan Connelly, president of
Looby Construction in Dub-
lin, was given the road build-
ing industry's highest honour
at the Ontario Road Builders'
Association (ORBA) 87th
annual convention.
"To say this was a shock
would be an understate-
ment," he said in a press
release.
Connelly served with
ORBA in several capacities
over 25 years, including as
chair of the Structures
Committee from 1993 to
2004, as a member of the
board of directors from 1992
to 2005 and as president in
1998.
Connelly, a Goderich resi-
dent, began his career at
Looby Construction as a
co-op student from the Uni-
versity of Waterloo and
worked in various positions
at the company, including
engineer, estimator, construc-
tion manager, assistant man-
ager and became president in
1990.
"His drive and determina-
tion was identified early by
the partners of Looby Con-
struction, which led to Stan's
continual growth within the
organization," said ORBA
executive director Geoff
Wilkinson as he introduced

Connelly.
Connelly's interview for his
first work term with Looby
Construction on March 17,
1963 turned out to be the only
job interview he ever had.
"It's been terrific. The Loo-
bys were like a family to me,
always giving me opportu-
nity," he said.
He built his first bridge in
1966, when he was still a
student.
Connelly achieved his
project manager Gold Seal
certificate in 1998 and is a
member of Professional Engi-
neers of Ontario.
Having been raised on a
farm, Connelly assumed he
would follow a career in the
agricultural industry. It
wasn't until his high school
math teacher, Harold Bettger,
approached him in 1962
about doing a co-op at the
new University of Waterloo
that he thought about a
career in engineering. Bettger
took him to his interview at
the University of Waterloo
and two weeks later, Connelly
was accepted into the
program.
In addition to making
Looby a respected member
of the industry and a good
place to work, Connelly was a
"tireless" promoter of health
and safety for workers in the
industry.
Connelly is also heavily
involved in his community of
Goderich. He is a lifetime
member of the Kinsmen Club
of Goderich and was an active
member of the Goderich
Hospital board from the mid-
1980s to 1999. He has also
been involved in other local
community initiatives such
as: Goderich Minor Hockey
coach; Goderich Power Skat-
ing coach; Goderich Young
Canada Week Tournament
Executive; St. Peter's Catholic
Church Building Committee,
fund raising executive;
Goderich Curling Club curl-
ing executive; Sunset Golf
Course men's golf executive;
and Goderich YMCA Build-
ing Committee (200!) - fund
raising committee.
The hall of fame was cre-
ated in 2005 to recognize
exemplary and distinguished
service to ORBA, to the
Ontario road building indus-
try and to the individual's
community over a long
period of time.
