Love Justice Week at St. Anne's
St. Anne's school news
Claire Gordon,
Minister of Public Relations
Throughout this past week, St. Anne's has been taking part
in Love Justice Week Each day we learned about a new leader
who promoted both justice and love in our world. On Tuesday,
Students heard from Rick Osborne, a speaker from Truth for
Teens. Rick's presentation involved his incredible life story,
which expressed to the students that bad decisions with drugs
can ruin our lives, but God is always there to save us. The pres-
entation was not only a great message for everyone, but an
awesome experience for all of the students.
On Wednesday, the Huron Perth Catholic District School
Board held their annual Applause Breakfast in Clinton. Two
students from each of the schools were recognized for their
incredible efforts in making a positive difference in their class-
room, school or their community. The morning was a great
celebration for these students, their families and the school
board. Our SHSM Arts and Culture Students were treated to
fabric workshop this week and all of our Winter athletes per-
formed well.
The week ended off with the Me to We clubs Valentine's Day
bake sale. All the money raised is going towards building a
school in India.
We are excited for our Winterfest celebration on Feb. 19,
where all students will be participating in outdoor activities in
the morning and then supporting our Girls Hockey Team in
the afternoon. This will be a great day to get out and celebrate
our Canadian Winter along with our favourite Road Hockey
tournament.

Harp helps local woman enjoy a fulfilling life
,Adria Graham will
perform at Goderich
Little Theatre
Paul Cluff
Goderich Signal Star
A Goderich harp teacher and a Huron
County woman who has overachieved
after a traumatic brain injury will warm
hearts when they entertain guests
before a performance at Goderich Little
Theatre.
Adria Graham wanted to learn the
harp after finishing high school.
"She always had an affinity for music,"
said her mother, Dee.
Dee taught in the Avon Maitland Dis-
trict Board and used her connections to
find Sharon Johnston. Teacher and stu-
dent still get together at Johnston's
Goderich home to share their love of
the instrument.
"She has the most phenomenal
memory for music," said Dee. "Once it's
there it's there. Mind you she doesn't
play like the others because of her
(mental) speed and processing but
what she does play she plays really well.
I am very proud of what she has
accomplished!'
Dee was told by doctors not to expect
much above a 'vegetative state' from
her daughter after Adria, now 33, fell in
a slurry tank when she was four -years -
old.
Her mother found her and performed
CPR. She was eventually placed in an
induced coma. When she awoke, Adria
seizured. She couldn't walk or talk and
her right side was paralyzed. Adria was
left with slowed speech and delayed
processing. In the Avon Maitland
District School Board, she was able to
get professional help learning to speak,
as well as physiotherapy and occupa-
tional therapy.
Bruce County had no such programs
available, she said, so Dee took her to
the Avon Maitland board and paid tui-
tion because she was from out of
county.
"She just came to school with me!"
Dee said she has been a tough
mother and has been told as much
numerous times. "Teachers said I was
too hard. But I expected and she has
come through.
She has done much more than I was
told she would ever do."
"We have had ups and downs, a lot of
tears!'
Adria learned the piano from her
grandmother and tried the harp at
Goderich's annual Celtic Festival. She
loved it instantly.
The connection with Johnston began
soon after that.
She started with a lyre; and could
play Twinkle, Twinlde Little Star.
"Adria has more patience and perse-
verance than anyone else I know," said
Johnston. "When she started on the
harp, she was painfully slow, and it took
more than a year before she could play
a recognizable tune. She learns by pat-
terns and finger numbers, and her
memory is amazing - she probably has
a repertoire of 30-40 songs at any time.
She can remember almost any song
that we have worked on!'
Johnston said when she started work-
ing with Adria, she had to get rid of any
preconceived notions of "progress" and
work to make music accessible.
"It taught me a great deal about what
everyone wants to learn when playing
music - how to have fun, how to play
together with others, and how to com-
municate with music. She helped me
develop the skills to teach everyone to
join together in making music - regard-
less of age, experience, or level."
Dee said her daughter doesn't sound
as accomplished as other students,
mainly because she processes differ-
ently but her improvement over the
years is noticeable.
Farming if the other passion for the
Graham family.
Mother and daughter work together
at an Alpaca farm on Highway 86, east
of Listowel. Adria helps out every day.
"If she didn't have her accident she
would have made an incredible veteri-
narian. They respond so well to her!'
She also works two days a week at a
pizzeria.
Adria also plays during the warmer
months with Johnston and a local
ensemble as they harp down the sun on
the Park House patio.
"She has become an important mem-
ber of our Huron Harp School commu-
nity, and has a strong sense of belong-
ing to our group," said Johnston. "Adria
is a wonderful example of what the
power of music, combined with passion
and a strong will, can do!'
Dee will introduce her daughter at a
gala opening for Kiss the Moon, Kiss the
Sun, a Norm Foster play premiering at
the Goderich Little Theatre Feb. 28 at 7
p.m. The play tells the story of a 35 -year-
old man who has a childhood brain
injury. He meets a single, pregnant
woman and they forge a relationship.
There is a chance Adria could return
for more of the performances (March 1,
2, 6, 7, 8.) The box office opens March 2
at 2 p.m.
"I think it's going to be awesome,"
said Dee.
