Local victim falls for online dating scam
A local man is out $55 after falling
victim to an online dating scam.
The victim reported he is a member
of a popular online dating website and
was contacted by the scammers through
email, expressing an interest in dating
him.
The scammers told the victim they
were unable to communicate via email
because they didn't want their partner
to become aware. They then directed
him to register with another online dat-
ing website. Following their instruc-
tions, the victim registered with the
other website and provided a credit
card number to verify his age, as well as
personal information.
After being charged $55 by the web-
site, he attempted to call a customer
service number that was provided, but
it was no longer in service.
Risky information sharing habits
have become increasingly common
across the country, whether it be
through online dating websites, games
or other Internet activities.
An estimated 7 million people in
Canada were victims of cybercrime last
year alone, according to the 2013 Nor-
ton Report released by U.S.-based soft-
ware security maker Symantec Corp.

than 13,000 people in about two dozen countries,

US$113 billion globally.
Some tips from Huron County OPP to avoid
being a victim of an online dating scam.
• Always check website addresses carefully.
Scammers often set up fake websites with very
similar addresses to legitimate dating websites.
Make sure you only use legitimate and reputa-
ble dating websites.
• Never send money or give credit card or online
account details to anyone you don't know and
trust. A request to send money to a foreign
country or to a person you have never person-
ally met should be a red flag.
• Be careful giving out personal information in an
email or when you are chatting online. Use the
computer to your advantage. Educate yourself,
ask questions, and be skeptical. Ask yourself,
does this sound legitimate? Does this make
sense? Don't let your emotions cloud your good
judgment.
• If you suspect that you may be a target of a
fraud, or if you have already sent funds, don't be
embarrassed, you are not alone.
Police encourage anyone who believes they may
have been a victim of fraud to contact the Cana-
dian Anti -Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca
or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
Those wishing to contact local law enforcement
can call the Huron OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-
1122 or (519) 524-1074.
