Grant helps playground QMI Agency Workwill begin this spring on a new playground for the village of Vanastra, thanks to a partner- ship between the Vanastra Rec- reation Centre, Huron East and Hydro One. The VRC submitted a grant application to Hyrdo One in June, and found out in Novem- ber they would receive $5,000 toward the project. The Power Play grant represents a just over a quarter of the $19,500 project, with Huron East chipping in $7,000 from their parks reserve and the rec centre using $6,000 from their annual Harley David- son draw fund. CH2M Hill also donated $1,000 to the play- ground project Facilities Manager Lissa Berard said the anticipated start date for construction is late April, and the grand opening sched- uled for June 27 with the theme - school's out, get out and play. Active Playground Equipment out of Point Edward has been selected for the project, which will feature new swing sets, tee- ter-totters, a climber and mon- key bars in addition to new park benches. It will be located just behind the baseball diamonds between the VRC and Vanastra Christian Church. "It's going to complement both facilities," Berard said. "It's a beautiful park out there:' Hydro One presented a cheque for $5,000 at the playground committee's Jan. 28 meeting. Tournament honours hockey dad Whitney South Huron Expositor Heading into it's fifth year, the Doug Perkes Memorial Hockey Tournament is set to take place once again in Seaforth, Feb. 7 to 9. Established in 2010 in mem- ory of Doug Perkes, an avid local sportsman and father, the annual tournament was set up to raise money for the Doug Perkes Memorial Fund, which helps out kids who want to play hockey, but whose families may not be able to afford it. Over the last five seasons, the fund has helped 32 local players with registration fees, six this season alone. A constantly growing event, what began as a six team day and evening tournament has since been spread over three days, with 16 registered teams from across Southwestem Ontario, "I think belonging to some kind of organized group is impor- tant on so many levels to teach kids life lessons," said Heather Percival, Perkes' wife and organ- izer. "Unfortunately hockey is one of the groups that can be pro- hibitively expensive for some kids. The reality is in Seaforth there are not too many options for winter team sports and a per- vasive feeling among many is hockey is the only real winter sport': According to Percival, the fund was put into place due to Perkes avid belief that team sports were an important part of any child's upbringing and that participa- tion in hockey was the best way to become part of a group and stay out of trouble. "So, to me, any activity done with a group, be it sports, scouts, cadets or 4H is good. But hockey costs more and that's why I devel- oped the fund," she said. ""It is our hope the proceeds from the tournament will augment this fund for many years to come' Former NHL player and hometown hero, Boyd Devereaux will be on hand at the Seaforth arena for the opening puck drop, and awards will be distributed after each game. Those wishing to donate to the Doug Perkes Memorial Fund can contact Heather Percival at 519- 522-2045, by email at hpercival@ ezlinlcca, or by contacting Randy McClure, manager of the Pee Wee LL team, at 519-527-0862 or rmcclure@ezlinlcca.
