KEEP YOUR HOLIDAY PARTIES SAFE
The festive season is upon us. And for many people that means holiday parties with alcohol. The Huron County Health Unit
has a few tips to help keep your get-togethers safe.
Be prepared
You are legally responsible for injuries or damages resulting from alcohol consumed at your home, office party or other
functions that you organize.
Know how your guests will be going home.
Be aware of who the designated drivers are and their phone numbers if they are not present.
Be prepared to take away car keys if a guest has had too much to drink.
Have phone numbers and spare cash available for taxi services.
Have emergency services phone numbers available.
Plan Ahead for a Safe Party
Put out plenty of snacks for guests because it is a good idea to eat when drinking alcohol ie. fingers foods, cheese, crackers,
veggies & dips. Remember though that salt increases thirst.
Arrange designated drivers, taxi services, bus arrangements.
Provide two or three non-alcoholic beverages ie. virgin caesars & punches, soft drinks, juice, iced tea, water, coffee. Serve
drinks yourself rather than letting guests serve themselves.
Guests often tend to drink more when they self -serve.
Have someone else help you monitor the situation.
Don't Take Chances
Don't drink a lot of alcohol yourself. It is important to be there
for your guests. You can think more clearly and react more quickly
to situations if your own alcohol level is low.
Have extra accommodations and bedding available for guests.
If you take anyone's car keys keep them overnight and let the
owner pick them up after 24 hours.
Be Smart
DON'T
DRINK&DRIVE!
Pay Attention Parents
Huron County has a high rate of drinking in the youth population. As a parent, you can help keep
youth you love safe by discussing a safety plan with them prior to devastating incidents.
Let them know that they can call home and a parent will come or arrange to pick them up and
drive them home safely. Tell the youth that no questions will be asked. Let them know that you
care about their safety. Make safe choices yourself so you set an example for them.
Have fun this festive season at your parties by planning ahead to avoid alcohol-related injuries.
