Kids and families lined the banks of Silver
Creek, hoping to catch one of the 200 fish
swimming about at the annual Lions
Trout Derby, held at Seaforth's Lions Park
May 3. The day's big winners were Carter
Dunsith, first place with 63 cm; Jacob Sills,
second place with 39 cm and Grace Bach
with 38 cm.
• Due to an overwhelming response from
the community, Seaforth Community
Hospital has received a new portable
ultrasound unit for its emergency room.
Last summer's CKNX Radiothon, as well
as several Christmas campaigns, brought
in an estimated $29,945, which helped
allow the Huron Perth Health Alliance to
purchase the machine.
■ St. James' student Sheldon Pryce was sur-
prised May 8 to learn he had received the
Joe Cinti Memorial Award for his excellent
score at the annual Knights of Columbus
Basketball Freethrow competition. Mak-
ing 23 out of 25 baskets during theprovin-
cial competition, Pryce was presented
with a trophy at school by Gerry Vanden-
Hengel and Joe Ryan.
■ Seaforth-area farmer and writer Chris
Spaleta was honoured as the Stratford Fes-
tival's 26 -millionth patron since its incep-
tion in 1953. He was awarded lifetime tick-
ets for two to the festival, a prize valued at
$3,000 a year for the rest of his life.
• An annual tradition organized by the Lon-
don Free Press for the past 45 years, the
Shunpiker's Mystery Tour of daytrip desti-
nations found its way to Seaforth on May
11. Visitors were treated to a wealth of
activity up and down Main Street, as well
as tours of historic sites including the Van
Egmond House, town hall and the local
Masonic Lodge.
IN St. James student, Jaymee Nolan, travelled
to Helsinki, Finland, to play for Canada at
the World Selects Hockey Invitational,
bringing home a gold medal in the
process.
• A gallery of over 40 golf fans followed Sea -
forth Country Classic Open champion,
David Markle, and Seaforth Golf Club's
assistant pro, Kyle Skinner, around the
back nine as the two played a Skins game
match in aid of the Canadian Diabetes
Association. Fans donated close to $500 to
the cause.
• Hundreds of area families turned out to
the Seaforth Community Centre on May
24 in support of the O'Reilly family and the
Drive for Dean. It was an action -packed
day featuring a family fun extravaganza, as
well as live and silent auctions followed by
a pulled pork dinner and dance.

The Queen's Hotel, one of
Seaforth's historical downtown
landmarks was destroyed late into
the evening on July 6. Despite an
investigation conducted by the
local fire department, the cause of
the blaze remained undetermined.
June, 2014
• A group of first year medical students
from Western took a tour of Eckerlea
Acres, just north of Seaforth, as part of
the Schulich School of Medicine's
annual Discovery Week. A chance to
experience the ins and outs of rural
medicine, some visited and worked in
Stratford, while others were placed in
either St. Mary's or Seaforth hospitals.
• Huron East's Art Bolton was part of a new
crop of inductees welcomed into the
Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame on June
8.
• Travis Postill and Terry Clark delivered a
cheque for $5,000 to Huron East council to
help rejuvenate the Seaforth Bandshell,
which is in much need of repair. The dona-
tion was made in memory of Barbara Jean
Box-Postill.
• The field battled rain and heavy winds at
times during the Golf Association of
Ontario's Women's Match Play Champi-
onship at Woodington Lake Golf Course,
but when it was all said and done, a famil-
iar name was the last one standing. Sea -
forth resident Robyn Doig capped off the
week with a 1 -up victory over Concord's
Christina Foster.
• The Seaforth Agriplex was hit with a blast
from the past as former staff and students
of Leadbury school, or SS#7, celebrated
their reunion on June 7. The school, which
closed in 1971, saw some students bussed
to the Little School House in Walton, while
the senior grades went on to Seaforth Pub-
lic School.
• From speedy superheroes to penguins
in Hawaiian shirts, dozens of eager
teams showed off their creative side at
the annual Toss 'Em Up Ringtoss Tour-
nament for Childhood Cancer on June
7. The tournament has been an annual
event for the Van Dyk family, in mem-
ory of their relative Nick, who lost his
battle with cancer when he was just 19
years old.
July, 2014
• The move to "Unite the Fight" has advanced
another step. Three local wind groups,
SWEAR (Safe Wind Energy for All Resi-
dents), HEAT (Huron East Against Tur-
bines) and HALT (Huron -Kinloss Against
Lakeside Turbines) have announced that
on Monday, June 9, the Falconer law firm
successfully argued to have their Divisional
Court appeals co -joined.
• Seaforth Manor celebrated not only their
annual family BBQ, but the renovation
and opening of their third floor, which has
seen vast improvements for its residents.
• The Seaforth Lions Club rang in their 90th
year with a 1920s themed family day at the
park on July 1. Visiting dignitaries
included both Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb
and MPP Lisa Thompson, as well as Huron
East Mayor Bernie MacLellan and Huron
County Warden Joe Steffler.
• The Queen's Hotel, one of Seaforth's his-
toric downtown landmarks was destroyed
by fire July 6. Fire officials completed an
investigation hoping to find the cause of
the fire, but have declared it
undetermined.
• Seaforth Community Hospital said good-
bye to one of their own, with a farewell cel-
ebration on July 10. Dr. Jason Datema, a
member of the family health team, is leav-
ing Huron County and heading to Burling-
ton to be closer to his family.
- It was that time of year again, time for the
pro golfers to take over the Seaforth Golf
Club for the annual Country Classic Open.
Kicking off the weekend, the club hosted a
few warm up events on July 31, including
the Junior Buddy Pro Am in the morning, a
Wee Break competition and an adults Pro
Am in the afternoon.
August, 2014
• The race began Aug. 1 for the 2014 Sea -
forth Country Classic title, not to mention
the $10,000 first prize. In the end Andrew
Parr, formerly of London, would fight off
competitors Lucas Kim, of Toronto as well
as last year's champion, David Markle, to
take the Country Classic title, finishing 11
under par.
• The Queen's Hotel is coming down after
council approved a demolition permit
application by the owner at their meeting
on Aug. 5.
• On Aug. 9 the Seaforth Squirt Wolverine
Baseball Team became the "A" Champions
of the Tri -County Softball Association
2014 tournament, held in Goderich.
• The mud was flying and the engines rev-
ving this weekend, as Walton Raceway
hosted the annual TransCan Grand
National Championship Aug. 13 to 17.
Deemed the `Celebration of Canadian
Motocross,' the event once again turned
the small hamlet into Motocross Town as
over 1,000 motocross riders and their fam-
ilies traveled from far and wife to compete
for Canada's biggest motocross awards.
Canadian Colton Facciotti may have taken
home his fourth Canadian National MX1
Championship, but it was American Mike
Alessi who wont the day, taking home the
coveted Walton Sword.
• Senior hockey is making its way back to
Seaforth this fall. The Huron East Cente-
naires are relocating from Goderich and
are set to make their debut Oct. 4.
• Folks came from far and wide, just to get a
chance to play in the Finlayson Memorial
Lawn Bowling tournament held in Sea -
forth on Aug. 20. The greens held a packed
house, with triples from Sarnia to Burling-
ton taking part n the annual tournament,
despite some questionable weather condi-
tions that left everyone a little soggy, Skip
Jurgen Fessler, of London, along with Mike
and Truitje Wagner of Kitchener, took top
prize for the day.
• The 2014 Huron County Plowing Match
took place in Walton Aug. 21 and 22 at the
Shortreed farm on Blyth Road. Winners
included junior champion, Darcy Fear
and senior champion, Kevin Haney.
