shortfall for annual campaign
United Way Perth Huron's annual
fundraising campaign is at 75 per-
cent of its goal as it enters the home
stretch.
They have raised slightly more than
$850,000 as of Dec. 22 and their goal is
$1,170,000 million.
"It's been a more difficult campaign
this year", said executive director
Ryan Erb. "While individual dona-
tions have been up significantly,
many of our work place campaigns
and special events have been down.
Since I've been in this role, I've prom-
ised to tell people where we are at,
good or bad. Last year we had nothing
but good news and overshot our goal.
This year, we've been behind most of
the campaign and now that we can
see the finish line, we are predicting
an approximately $40,000 shortfall."
Despite this challenge, Campaign
volunteers remain encouraged and
are going to work hard to make up the
difference.
"It's really important that we meet
the goal," said campaign co-chair and
Stratford Police Chief John Bates.
"So many important projects and
agencies are relying on the United
Way." co-chair Wayne Smith, said,
"We need everyone's help to meet
our goal. And, what better time of
year to think about giving a gift.
Please give generously."
The campaign provides resources for
nearly 50 agencies, projects and pro-
grams directly targeting the most press-
ing needs of our two counties.
In 2013, their campaign raised
$1,151,000.
Donations can still be made at 519-
271-7730 or on line at www.perthhu-
ron.unitedway.ca.
Residents reminded of
new smoking regulations
The Huron County Health Unit
reminds residents of the changes to the
Smoke Free Ontario Act coming in
2015.
Starting Jan. 1, 2015, it will be ille-
gal to:
• Smoke on bar and restaurant patios
• Smoke on and around children's
playgrounds and publicly owned sport
fields and surfaces (such as areas for
basketball, baseball, soccer or beach
volleyball, ice rinks, tennis courts,
splash pads and swimming pools)
• Sell tobacco on university and col-
lege campuses.
"The Huron County Health Unit will
be enforcing these changes,"
said Patrick Landry, Public Health
Inspector. "We will be available to
answer any questions people may have
about the new regulations as well as
supporting the transition of these
spaces to being smoke free."
The Ontario government said it
has made these changes in order to
limit smoking in public places, to
reduce second hand smoke expo-
sure and to protect children and
youth from the harmful effects of
smoking.
