Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson wants to see
more focus on agriculture
in Ontario's classrooms.
Last week, Thompson
introduced a private mem-
bers motion requesting that
a agri-food component,
focused on career opportu-
nities, be added to the
province's Grade 9 and 10
guidance and career educa-
tion curriculum.
According to a media
release from Thompson,
Ontario's agri-food industry
is facing labour shortages.
"(Shortages) that can
only be expected to
increase as workers retire
and the types of skills
required in the industry
evolve," Thompson said in
the release.
Thompson said a recent
report by the Ontario Agri-
culture College, University
of Guelph and Food and
Beverage Ontario under-
scored the challenges faced
by the industry.
"I applaud the University
of Guelph and Food and
Beverage Ontario on the
development of their action
plan, it is a step in the right
direction," Thompson said.
"Indeed, a new generation
must be interested and
enthused to pursue post-
secondary education
focused on primary agricul-
ture and agri-food sectors.
The question is: when
should this focus be
fostered!'
In the media release,
Thompson said when Pre-
mier Kathleen Wynne was
the Minister of Agriculture
and Food and Rural Affairs,
she challenged the sector to
create 120,000 new jobs by

2020, yet youth awareness
and interest in the Ontario's
agri-food industry remains
low.
"Educational stakehold-
ers I met with highlighted
the current reality that food
related post -secondary pro-
grams have had extremely
low student enrollment
rates."
"All of this indicates that
we need to promote careers
in agri-food to youth,"
Thompson said. "This
awareness and education
needs to happen in a timely
fashion so students can
make informed decisions
about their post -secondary
opportunities."
On Dec. 4, Huron -Bruce MP
Ben Lobb announced employ-
ers can now apply for funding
under Canada Summer Jobs
2015.
This funding will create thou-
sands of job opportunities for
students across the country.
Funding will be available to
not-for-profit organizations,
public -sector employers and
small businesses to hire quali-
fied young people aged 15 to
30, who are full-time students
and intend to return to school
in the fall. It is estimated that
up to 35,000 young Canadians
will benefit from summer
employment while helping
employers address skills
shortages.
"Our government's priorities
are creating jobs, economic
growth and long-term prosper-
ity," Lobb said. "Through Can-
ada Summer Jobs, we are help-
ing young Canadians get the
sldlls and experience they need
to get jobs now and in the
future. I encourage employers
to apply for funding to create
jobs that will help students,
employers and their local
economies.
Employers may submit
applications at www.service-
canada.gc.ca/csj by Jan. 30,
2015.
