Seaforth Fair Ambassador heads to Toronto to compete at the CNE

For Seaforth Fall Fair
Ambassador Danika Klaver,
getting the chance to wear
a crown has surely become
a family affair.
Big sister Samantha is a
past fall fair winner, while
younger sister Miranda cur-
rently holds the junior
ambassador title.
Klaver will head off this
week to the Canadian
National Exhibition (CNE)
to compete in the Ambas-
sador of the Fairs contest
against dozens of other
young men and women
from across Ontario.
"The winner represents
all the fairs in Ontario and
so they try to make it to all
the fairs after they win the
CNE," she explained.
"They get to go around
and educate people about
fairs and how people can
get involved."
Over the first couple
days, Klaver will be inter-
viewed by a panel of judges
along with almost 80 other
contestants, who will then
take part in seminars and
tours. Each event is just one
step towards the semi-
finals, which will only see a
small number of contest-
ants compete.
If she makes it, Klaver
will give a 90 -second
speech, during which she'll
talk about how agriculture
is a subject, which should
be taught in school.
"If we could, we should
teach more kids about
agriculture, because it
only seems to come into
play when we go to college
or university," she said. A
topic clearly right up her
alley, as she will be head-
ing to the University of
Guelph this fall to study
agriculture herself.
Just the chance to attend
the CNE, let alone compete
for the title, is cause
enough for Klaver to get a
little excited.
"I've been to see my sis-
ter compete, but we never
really had a chance to
walk around and really
take a good look at every-
thing," she said.
The CNE has hosted the
Ambassador of the Fairs
competition for the past
35 years and have seen
over 3,500 young people
aged 18 to 25 compete
from across the province.
The idea is to promote,
educate and inform the
public on Canadian agri-
culture, all while bridging
the gap between rural and
urban communities.
This year's ambassadors
have already gotten a chance
to make friends, during a
convention held in Toronto
early in the year.
Agricultural interests, per-
sonal achievements, leader-
ship, current events, public
speaking and poise are all
attributes that make up a
CNE winner
"I'm really excited to go
and meet up with all the
other ambassadors," said
Klaver. "But I'm also really
interested to see how much
agriculture is incorporated
throughout the weekend."
