Art exhibition celebrates Blyth 158th edition of Bayfield
Centre 401h anniversary Fair this summer
Special to the Expositor
The Blyth Festival Art
Gallery is taking a trip
back in time to celebrate
the 40th anniversary of
the Blyth Centre for the
Arts.
The gallery has been
hosting exhibitions in
conjunction with the cen-
tre, starting in 1976, with
local artists displaying
their work in a makeshift
space in the basement of
the Memorial Hall.
Since then art has been
displayed at the Festival
and the individual works
have found their way into
local homes, as well as
private collections across
the province and even
internationally.
Among the great artists
whose work has been
shown are London's Herb
Ariss, George Reid and
Robert Bateman, as well
as native artists from Man-
itoulin Island and some of
the most prominent mak-
ers of craft in the
province.
It is fitting that two of
the founding members of
the Gallery, Ron Walker
and Jerry McDonnell are
curating the show, which
will include works from
previous exhibitions as
well as present Gallery
members.
They dedicate a special
acknowledgment to the
late Dan and Marg Web-
ster, who Walker says,
"bought a piece from
almost every exhibition
we had."
Viewers can expect to
see beautiful examples of
paintings in oil, acrylic,
watercolour and encaus-
tic, photography, mixed
media, wood engravings
and woodcuts, zinc
engravings and litho-
graphs, silk screen and
collage. In three dimen-
sional work, there is
stoneware, porcelain and
raku pottery, blown,
slumped and stained
glass, rug hooking, fabric
art, folk art, metal, wood
turning and carving, and
other media too numerous
to mention. It's a one -of -
a -kind trip down memory
lane for the gallery.
"Celebrating 40 Years", a
retrospective exhibition, is
presented by the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery and
sponsored by Carol and
Jerry McDonnell and Bev
and Ron Walker.
It can be viewed in the
Bainton Gallery (next to
the box office) in the Blyth
Memorial Hall, Aug. 15 to
September 20, Tuesdays to
Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to
9 p.m.
The public is invited to
attend the opening recep-
tion on Friday, Aug. 15 at 6
pm.
For more information,
contact Robert Tetu at
519-345-2184 or email gal-
lery@blythfestival.com.
The return of summer
also means the return of
the Bayfield Fair.
The 158th edition of
the fair takes place Aug.
15 to Aug. 17 at the Bay-
field Community Centre,
Arena and Fairgrounds,
hosted by the Bayfield
Agricultural Society.
As always the fair will
feature many activities
including a youth talent
show, concessions, dis-
plays, parade, a shore
show, 4-H club achieve-
ments, a pet display and
much more.
For a full schedule of
events check www.bay-
fieldfallfair.ca, where a
full book on the rules for
entries and other infor-
mation is available.
Information on volun-
teering opportunities is
available as well.
The theme for this
year's fair is "The Cows
are at the Gate in Our
The 2014 parade will

ies, participants to be
announced closer to the
event date.
