Steve Howe Special to the Expositor So you've thought about having a voice in public education, or you are just curious about how the system works. Here is your chance to learn all about what it is like to become a school board trustee. The current board of trustees for the Avon Maitland District School Board is hosting a special evening on Tues., May 6 to share with anyone who might have an interest in becoming a trustee, what it's like being a trustee. As the 2014 municipal elections come up on October 27 of this year, this is an excellent opportunity to learn as much as possible about the process and about the commitment to our students. The event begins at 7:30 pm at the Education Centre, 62 Chalk St. N. in Seaforth. You bring local knowledge of the education issues in your communities and the interests of your constituents into broader school board discussions. And school boards have the capacity to respond to local priorities, and to develop local policies, programs and solutions to respond to local needs. The mission statement of the Avon Maitland District School Board calls us to "Engage, Inspire and Irmovate" and recognized that students, staff, parents and volunteers are 'Always Learning" Browse through the board website, yourschools.ca and prepare to be amazed by the breadth and depth of the programs and activities that Ontario school boards have developed to guide and shape the students of today. You will read all about our 1 to 1 iPad project, our Inter- national student program, how we "ignite Parents" along with many great sto- ries and videos from our schools across the district. Ontario school boards across the province offer pro- grams designed to promote achievement of First Nation, Metis and Inuit students and to welcome the world of new 2014-15 school calendars approved by AMDSB The board of trustees has approved the calendars for the 2014-15 Avon Maitland District School Board year. The respective school year calendar committees of the Avon Maitland Dis- trict School Board and the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board develop the school year calendars for each year. The result is that calendars between Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) and Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board align identically. The 2014-2015 school year com- mences Tues., Sept. 2, 2014 with an instructional day and classes end on Thurs., June 25, 2015 with an instruc- tional day. Christmas Break commences Mon., Dec. 22, 2014 and concludes Fri., Jan. 2, 2015. Classes resume Mon., Jan. 5, 2015. March Break commences on Mon., March 16 and concludes on Fri., March 20, 2015. Six professional activity days are scheduled as follows: Fri., Sept. 26, 2014 Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, Thurs., January 29, 2015, Fri., April 24, 2015 Fri., June 5, 2015 and Fri., June 26, 2015 The Board approved the 2014/2015 elementary and secondary school year calen- dars, subject to Ministry approval.
