Concussion management being
discussed by Mitchell Minor Sports
Andy Bader
Mitchell Advocate
Mitchell Minor Sports is consider-
ing implementing baseline concus-
sion testing for all its athletes, or at
least educating their "front line"
bench staff about them.
At their last meeting March 26, ath-
letic therapist Dan McIntosh made a
presentation about concussion man-
agement services his Stratford com-
pany - McIntosh Sports Performance
And Rehabilitation (MSPAR) - can
offer.
A few weeks prior, McIntosh made
a similar presentation to Mitchell
Minor Hockey (MMH), and MMH
President Jamie Daum recommended
McIntosh speak to the entire umbrella
organization.
With concussions, especially to
young athletes, a reoccurring prob-
lem, Minor Sports is interested in
finding ways to make playing sports
safer.
McIntosh said his company would
offer the most advanced concussion
management program to help local
organizations stay up-to-date with
player safety trends, and create a
"systematic way" that suspected head
injuries are handled.
The program being proposed meets
the requirements of Hockey Canada's
return to play policy and reduces the
workload and anxiety for the bench
staffs of each team - front line
volunteers.
"Most importantly, we provide the
training and support with this pro-
gram that ensures your staff and
members can adapt quickly and real-
ize the improvement in player safety
immediately," he said.

Concussions can
be an anxious time
for the whole
family, and we can
help calm that
down."
— Dan McIntosh
A thorough baseline test
will be administered for
every child over the age of
10 at their Stratford office
to use as a baseline. McIn-
tosh noted that it's impor-
tant that each athlete has
their own baseline because
each athlete is different in
case a concussion is
suspected.
Concussions can be an
"anxious time for the whole
family," he added, "and we
can help calm that down."
An addition to the base-
line tests, and post -injury
care as needed, McIntosh
said his company offers
educational seminars to
players and parents and
bench staff prior to the start
of the next season. Each
team will be provided with
a checklist that will assist
with recognizing the signs
and symptoms of
concussions.
Quite often, parents and
players may feel they have
a concussion but are fear-
ful to get it checked out by
a doctor for fear of being
sidelined for a lengthy
amount of time.
"This can really help
them, and we need to be
the bad guy in some cases,"
he said.
This past season, McIn-
tosh said their company
treated 26 concussion cases
- 14 as a result of contact
hockey, and the other 12 in
non -contact sports.
The cost for each athlete
under the Minor Sports
organization is being nego-
tiated, and if Minor Sports
agrees to move forward
with this plan, costs would
be put back on the parents.
Some directors of Minor
Sports were a little hesitant
to do that, especially with
registration rates already
committed for the winter
sport season of 2014-15.
Further discussion is
needed at the next Minor
Sports meeting planned for
April 23, but President
Mark Moore said for the
upcoming year at least, the
focus should be on
education.
"I truly believe players
are safer with a program
such as this," said
McIntosh.
