Get ready for a weekend of fun.
A musical fundraiser is taking place
Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 at the
Crystal Palace in Mitchell, and will fea-
ture a variety of entertainment including
fiddlers, step dancers, an old tyme dance
and a long list of past performers.
"I saw the ad that the Agricultural Soci-
ety had in the paper about buying a bun-
dle of shingles," said committee member
Ted Schinbein. "I just thought it would be
cool if all the musicians that have played
there over the years got together and held
a great big party for two days and a fund-
raiser. I called Larry [Stacey] right away
and said let's get a hold of a fewguys'
A committee was formed comprising
of Agricultural Society Past President,
Byron Morris; former long-time Mitchell
resident, Larry Stacey; local business
owner, Ted Schinbein and area musicians
Royce Riehl and Ron Coulthardt.
The springtime event will raise funds
for the Crystal Palace and help with ongo-
ing maintenance, repairs and upkeep,
including needed work done on the roof
and an update to the washrooms.
"It'll be a century old in 2017 - the Crys-
tal Palace was built in 19177 said Monis.
"It's been very important to us as part
of the Fair and in 1947 we started having
dances there to help raise money for the
Agricultural Society," he added, noting
the unique 70 -foot round design of the
building.
"Our ancestors built this and it's up to
us now to keep the roof on and keep it
going!'
Fellow committee member Larry Sta-
cey was born and raised in Mitchell and
has fond memories of the Crystal Palace.
"It was a place I went to as a teenager
dancing, I never missed a dance. Then I
got into fiddling and step dancing with
our family - they always had the fiddle
contests in the Crystal Palace," he said,
noting the building was also a popular
place for family reunions over the years.
Mitchell and area residents can expect
to have a jam-packed, fun -filled weekend
that will include music, dancing, food,
shared memories and great
entertainment.
Saturday afternoon, May 3, the Crystal
Palace will welcome fiddle players and
step dancers as well as a cross-section of

country music artists both young and old,
while that evening will play host to a very
entertaining Old Tyme Dance featuring
everything from polka and waltzes to
square dancing.
Mitchell and area residents wishing to
take a stroll down memory lane won't
want to miss the concert of Crystal Palace
the next day, May 4, featuring a long list of
past performers over the years.
The two-day major musical event will
wrap up Sunday evening with Clare
French conducting the Mitchell Legion
Band.
Schedules and lineups for perform-
ances are yet to be determined and a list
of talented musicians, including surviv-
ing members of the Country Cousins as
well as Clarence Petrie and the Night
Hawks are coming together for the fund-
raising musical event.
"The enthusiasm that's being gener-
ated amongst the musicians we're con-
tacting is great," said Schinbein. "They
have great memories of playing here at
the Crystal Palace:'
Anticipation for the event in early May
is already building, noted Stacey, and
with such deep-rooted, local history in
Mitchell, the Crystal Palace fundraiser
will be an event you won't want to miss.
"The committee's working hard with
the Agricultural Society to put a four -stage
program together that people will really
enjoy," added Stacey. "We're going to
have entertainment, we're going to have
dancing, we're going to have musicians
and there may be food.
"It's going to be all weekend," he con-
tinued. "We're going to have a great time,
bring back old memories and raise some
money'
