Bantam LL Stars win
Lucknow Tournament
For the Expositor
The Bantam LL team went a perfect
3-0 last month to win the Elaine Irwin
Memorial Bantam Development Tourna-
ment in Lucknow.
The team opened the tournament with
a very early 8 a.m, game against South
Bruce. It felt like 7 a.m. given that clocks
had moved an hour ahead during the
night due to the switch to Daylight Sav-
ings Time. Nonetheless, once fully
awake, the Stars dominated this game
and cruised to a 5-1 to advance to the "A"
side of the tournament. Each team's first
game decided whether they would com-
pete on the "A" or "B" side of the tourna-
ment with all games after the first game
being elimination games.
Next up for the Stars was the Blyth -
Brussels Crusaders at 2:15 p.m. The Cru-
saders had defeated the host Lucknow
team in a close 4-3 contest and were
eager to face the Stars. The Stars and
Crusaders had already faced each other
four times during the regular and post
seasons with the Stars winning all four
contests by a combined score of 19-1,
including 5-0 just the evening before.
However, included in the wins was a
tight 2-1 game earlier in the season so
perhaps the Stars should have been more
wary then they were. This game proved
to be a great contest. The Crusaders
goalie "stood on his head" in the early
going of the first period to rob the Stars'
snipers of 2-3 otherwise sure fire goals.
The Crusaders keep the Stars to the out-
side as the Stars peppered the Crusaders'
goalie. The Crusaders had tremendous
jump and gave the Stars all they could
handle as the Stars' goalie, Trevor DeCo-
rte, had to come up with some big saves
of his own to keep the Stars in it. Both
teams managed but a single goal during
the game even though the Stars almost
doubled the number of shots the Cru-
saders managed. It was to be decided in
a 3 person shootout. The Stars' first two
shooters, Logan Finlayson and Duncan
Greidanus, "buried the biscuit" and
DeCorte turned aside both shoots he
faced for a nail-biting 2-1 win and
advancement to the "A" Championship
Final at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, advancing on the other
side to the "A" final were the Hanover
Falcons who defeated Milverton 6-3 and
Wingham 3-0. The Stars had faced the
Falcons twice during regular season play
and split the pair games with a 6-3 win at
home to open the season and a 4-3 loss
in Hanover a few weeks later. Both teams
were eagerly looking forward to the
rematch to see how they had progressed
during the season. The Stars were
"revved up" and "firing on all cylinders"
for this game as they dominated play
throughout the game, spread the scoring
around, and went on to win 4-0 to claim
the "A" Championship.
