Libs' green dream
now a nightmare
ire biggest scandal of the Kathleen Wynne/Dalton McGuinty
Liberal government of Ontario — the cancelled gas plants in
Oakville and Mississauga — stems directly from its
disastrous blunder into green energy.
The legacy of this foolish, reckless decision is now a criminal
investigation that extends into the premier's office, as well as
billions of wasted dollars that will have to be paid by Ontarians
for decades to come.
The controversy besmirches what the Wynne/McGuinty
Liberals claim as one of their proudest achievements — their
elimination of coal-fired plants to produce electricity, replacing
it, they say, with cleaner, greener wind and solar power.
That claim is nonsense.
Wind and solar power can't replace coal because they can't
provide base load power on demand to the electricity grid.
Aside from being outrageously expensive — wind and solar are
only economically viable with massive public subsidies, costing
billions of dollars, which taxpayers and hydro consumers will be
paying for decades to come — they are also notoriously unreliable.
Because the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't
always blow — and even when it does blow the wind doesn't
always blow at the right speed — wind and solar power have to be
backed up by energy generated by fossil fuels.
And that's how Liberals really replaced coal-fired electricity
in Ontario.
They built a whack of natural gas plants, the cleanest fossil fuel,
to replace coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel, with the secondary purpose
of backing up wind and solar power.
Two of those gas plants were supposed to be built in Oakville
and Mississauga, until local opposition frightened the Liberals into
cancelling and moving them in order to save five Liberal seats in
the 2011 provincial election.
That decision, the Auditor General of Ontario has determined,
will cost the public up to $1.1 billion, in addition to the billions of
dollars extra Ontarians will be paying for decades to come to fund
expensive, unreliable and unneededwind and solar power.
Attempting to defend the Liberals' disastrous energy policies
before the Legislature justice committee investigating the gas
plants scandal, McGuinty testified: "We got 17 gas plants right, but
we got Oakville and Mississauga wrong, so we needed to fix that:'
More nonsense. What the Wynne/McGuinty government
actually got wrong was their expensive, reckless, ill-informed and
unnecessary venture into wind and solar power — the
boondoggle to end all boondoggles.
Wind and solar power were never going to replace coal as an
energy source, nor were they needed to do so.
Natural gas and an increased reliance on nuclear power
replaced coal.
And now, the Liberals have screwed that up, wasting billions
of public dollars in the process and prompting a police
investigation alleging a criminal breach of trust involving the
destruction of government computer records, leading into the
premier's office itself.
Selfies alone
won't cure cancer
It's been pretty hard to
miss the thousands of
women flooding social
media sites with photos
of themselves, sans
makeup, in an attempt to
raise awareness for
numerous cancer
charities.
We've all seen it; moms,
sisters and friends, baring
it all to help fight for a
cure.
An idea originally con-
ceived by beauty retailer
Escentual in September
2013, it was meant to help
endorse the country's
DareToBare campaign for
women in the UK to raise
money and awareness for
Breast Cancer Care.
Far outreaching its orig-
inal national demo-
graphic, women around
the world have jumped
on the bandwagon, not
only posting their own
faces, but also encourag-
ing their friends by means
of nomination.
The original campaign
wanted to persuade
women of all ages and
walks of life to get spon-
sored to go to work, social
activities or even a night
out without their make-
up on, essentially making
a statement in the same
vain as their male coun-
terparts do each Movem-
ber by growing all that
ridiculous facial hair.
But, as with many
trends on social media
these days, the idea
behind the phenomenon
has gotten a little lost.
Unfortunately, for many
the makeup -less selfie
has become just that,
another self -taken photo
casually added to an
Column
Whitney South
Huron Expositor
already plentiful album of
duckfaced shots.
And it's because of
these girls the trend has
started to attract a ton of
negative criticism.
In a society where tak-
ing pictures of yourself
has become an interna-
tional pastime, it's impor-
tant to remember cam-
paigns like these were
started for a reason, and
not just for our own self-
indulgence.
Regardless, the trend
has attracted an abun-
dance of women who
know what it's all about
and have taken steps in
helping raise much-
needed funds.
Thankfully, the cam-
paign has already raised
millions in the UK and
the Canadian Cancer
Society says they have
seen a major rise in
online donations by a
whopping 240 per cent.
It's always refreshing to
see a woman who can see
her own natural beauty,
but we can only hope
more of them can take the
time to find a way to
donate to the cause,
whether that be finan-
cially, or by giving their
time volunteering for a
local charity.
A little help goes a long
way.
