Cameron Tells of : The New Country To' The Editor of The .Sentinels- • Having spent the past eight weeks. in Northern Ontario in connection with my work, perhaps it may prove interesting and instructive to Some o# your readers to hear something of this northern sectio of. our Province which, during the I past twenty=five years or more .has made such a sur- prising development. Travelling in the North in 'summertime is 'very in- teresting. The'air is, so pyre and re- -fresh -in the--scenery-an-everchang- ing delight as the railway passes through deep cuts in, the rocks, then skirting around beautiful lakes or, coursing- along large rivers with nu- .nerous waterfalls, with theroad bed. dike a winding avenue lined on each, side withtrees and shrubs of great variety of color and beauty. Among so ,many.'places of interest, space will allow me only to mention a few deserving special notice. Manitoulin island which I' reached iy boat trip from Owen .Sound` is. now coming' to its own. It is shout 100 miles long -a -the largest island\in fresh water on the globe -and is be coming a : popular summer resort eine the Algoma Eastern railway, now lues entered the island' and also a motor road by . way of Espanola; Phis, has largely increasedthe tour- ist traffic as there. are splendid roads around and through the 'island, and there is an abundance of small lakes 'and streams where good fishing is to be found.: A point of business inter- est is the Mecca. of the North, Sud- bury, during the ,past few years. In three years Sudbury, has .grown from 9,000 to 20,000 population and this' summer took on the states of a city. The great 'development of the nines of Nickel and Copper exploits the rapid growth as 90% of the world's output of Nickel now comes from this district. Copper Cliff an adjunct of Sudbury, about five miles west is where the smelting, and refining is done.. Owing to the smoke and sulphur fumes the country around is deso- late and barren of trees or vegeta- tion of any kind, and The Internat- ional Nickel Co. has built . lately the largest smoke stack in. the British Empire being 510 feet high and 45 feet inside diameter. It is hoped that by dissapeting the smoke and fame so high in mid-air that -vegetation Will be restored and also be health- ier for the people who work and live there. Another very interesting point is Sioux Lookout where I :am spending this week -end. it is a railway town beautifuly situated on Pelican Lake and on the C. N. Trans -continental railway, 525 miles west of Cochrane and 1100 , miles1 from Lucknow by railway: It is a nicely laid out town. population 2000, with wide streets and geed business, places. The 'railway maintains a splendidly .equipped Y. . M.C.A with bowling green, tennis court, and .a' comfortable reading room well supplied with papers and magazines. This is one of the closed - in towns of the north, the only inlet and' outlet east and west is the rail- way line. A motor road is under con- struction to Dryden 52 miles south west and 13 miles is already complet- ed at this end. Officially I learned they have 175 .autos, so they are "keeping up with the Jones." This reminded me of the story of the girl, Fall dressed up and no where to go." Reit if they cannot set ant hv' mute Oats-4O.A.CA NO. 144-1 qt. W. Thaw. 4, Neely ' Todd, 50c; W. Wow. 1,.
