More Clintonians
getting the shot
this year
Gerard Creces
Clinton News -Record
Nearly 500 Clinton residents were shot last week.
The Clinton Family Health Team saw an increase in
patients getting flu shots at their four-day clinic Nov 4-7, with
more opting to get the shot during regular appointments as
well.
"That is up from last year slightly," said Kimberly Van Wyk,
Executive Director at the health team. "Part of the reason
could be there has been more awareness for the vaccine
being available."
Another factor in the increase is the addition of two new
physicians for the family health team, allowing them to
recently take on approximately 200 new patients. Van Wyk
said they are looking at taking on another 300 patients, how-
ever, calls should be directed to Health Care Connects at
1-800-445-1822. The provincial service links callers to their
local health care providers, adding them to the local list.
Currently Clinton takes on about 50 new patients a
month.
As for the flu, Van Wyk said all patients are encouraged to
get the shot, especially those over 65 years of age and younger
patients with chronic diseases - particularly immune -sup-
pressant illnesses. Mail -outs have been sent to patients over
65. Flu shots are available until the end of January.
Within the clinic itself, 85 per cent of staffers have received
their flu shots. Staff inoculations are not mandatory in
Ontario, but it is suggested they do so.
Good news for those on the receiving end of the needle,
Van Wyk said there has been a noticeable decrease in patients
reporting soreness in the arm after getting their shots. While
she said it's not clear why, there have been a number of peo-
ple attest to it.
Anyone wanting a flu shot should call the health team first
at 519-482-3000. People can also receive flu shots during reg-
ularly scheduled appointments.
