Makins raises money through
birthday swim

For her 80th birthday, Marg Makins decided she would do
something special. On November 7, she swam 80 lengths of the
Vanastra pool, raising more than $5,200 for two causes - the Clin-
ton Public Hospital and the Vanastra Recreation Centre. At first,
Makins said the swim was intended as something to celebrate a
milestone, but when she told her friends, they suggested she use
the event as a fundraiser.
"And I accomplished it," she said this past week poolside at the
rec centre. "I've never had a swimming lesson in my life."
Makins visits the pool about three times a week, where she reg-
ularly swims 40-50 laps. Her 80 laps began at 6:20 and took about
an hour and a half.
Initially, she said she wanted to do it on her birthday, Nov 2.
However, her family had other plans.
"My husband was planning a party" she said. "I knew I couldn't
party and swim on the same day."
Makins is a long-time supporter of the hospital, serving on the
hospital auxiliary, foundation and board for the past 30 years.
"We definitely appreciate the support she continues to give,"
said Darren Stevensen, hospital foundation president. "This is a
milestone in life. It's great she would consider us to be a benefici-
ary of her efforts."
"Lord knows we need both of these facilities, Makins said. She
said she would like to thank all her sponsors for their generosity.
