Goderich Township residents to submit private member's bill to de -amalgamate

The quest for an independent Goderich
Township continues.
Huron -Perth Landowners Association
President Cindy Moyer said volunteers are
busy finishing up with their petition to de -
amalgamate the former township, with a goal
of 50 per cent plus one of residents saying
they are for the process.
"We are almost there," she said in an inter-
view with the News -Record. "That's good
news for the people working on it and good
news for the people of Goderich Township."
The Goderich Township issue has caught
the eye of many other municipalities across
the province, Moyer said. Since amalgama-
tion was implemented across Ontario in the
late 1990s and early 2000s, many rural
municipalities were forced to go in with
urban centres.
In his earlier statements to council, Coun-
cilor Brian Barnim noted the majority of tax
dollars raised in Central Huron comes from
the township, while the majority of money
spent is in Clinton.
While there have been many
municipalities to fight amalgamation, few
have ever been successful. Moyer said the
approach Goderich Township residents are
taking is to look at what failed in the past and
avoid duplicating a losing battle.
"Basically, there are a lot of municipalities
feeling the pinch," she said. "Especially rural,
non -serviced areas that are partnered up
with small towns. The urban areas end up
with the lion's share of tax dollars."
Barnim will be taking a Petition of Right -
an old constitutional law dating back to 1897
- to plead the case for Goderich Township to
the Crown. In addition to this, Moyer said
they are currently working on drafting a pri-
vate member's bill to be delivered to Queen's
Park by New Democrat MP Michael Prue.
The Goderich Township group had asked
Huron -Bruce MP Lisa Thompson to deliver
the bill in the house, but Moyer noted, "We
received no favourable response."
The legislature has no mechanism for de -
amalgamating municipalities, and Moyer
said everything is worth a try because it raises
awareness of the short -fallings of forced
amalgamation and gets the conversation
started.

Making it work
Let's Talk Science, an educational group from the University of Western
Ontario, were at Huron Centennial School Thursday, Nov. 28, leading
Grade 7 and 8 students through the inventing process. Groups of students
assumed the roles of engineers, scientists, consultants and purchasing
agents as they tried to build self-propelling devices. Each group had
a budget of $1,000, which they had to use to buy materials for their
inventions.

PJ toss on Dec. 7
The Clinton Radars played
two road games last week-
end. On Friday they travelled
to Petrolia and came home
with a hard-fought 2-0 win.
Justin Knee and Tyler Van-
Drunen scored for the
Radars while Tommy Lee
made 40 saves for his second
shutout of the season.
Saturday night in Tavistock
the Radars weren't at their
best and fell 6-3. Tyler Doig
scored twice with Luke Vick
adding a single.
The Radars record is now
9-5-1.
Coming this Saturday, the
Radars are asking for your
PJs, with their first pajama
toss at their Dec. 7 home
game against the Goderich
Pirates. Fans are asked to
bring in a pair of kids' paja-
mas for the Children's Aid
Society. When the Radars
score their first goal of the
game, it's tossing time. In
previous years the Radars
held a teddy bear toss, but
the CAS said kids' pajamas
are in high demand this
year.
