All opinions are welcome - which often sparks lively discussion of favourite short stories and characters created by Ms. Munro's imagination. Com- plete information and tickets are available atwww.alicemu- nrofestival.ca. A record number of short stories were submitted for the 2014 Short Story Competition, which welcomes emerging and beginning writers to cap- ture their short story in 5000 words or less. Selected final- ists in the two age categories, Youth 14 - 20 years and Adults 21 and over will be awarded their cash prizes during the Saturday, September 27th Gala Dinner. The judges are in the process of finalizing their review of the record- breaking 252 stories received this year, while volunteer members of the Alice Munro Festival's steering committee are completing the detailed plans for Festival events that celebrate emerging writers and avid readers. Kicking off this year's Festi- val is a new event - The Book Club Bash. Alice Munro fans and members of regional book clubs are invited to a lively moderated discussion of Alice Munro's latest collection "Dear Life" on Friday, Sep- tember 26th at the Wingham Golf Course. Hosted by the Huron County Library and moderated by the Branch Ser- vices Librarian Jennifer Zoethout, guests are sure to be engaged in spirited banter. On Saturday morning, at the Blyth Memorial Hall, three simultaneous workshops are planned for those who wish to hone their craft. Melanie Chambers will be back to expand what was offered in last year's very popular Self - Editing session, while Jodi Jerome will tackle "Beyond Google, Research for Writers" and Brian Francis will share his expertise of writing for new technologies in "Beyond Print: Getting Creative with Social Media" The luncheon event - On Reading Alice Munro will fea- ture expert commentators who will explore Ms. Munro's writing, settings, and charac- ter development with ener- getic popular response from the audience. Luncheon guests will surely enjoy the panel who are avid Munro fans and each will honour the work of our Nobel Prize-win- ning Laureate in appropriate fashion. This year's luncheon will be be catered by Chef Peter Gusso of Part II Bistro. After lunch guests will head to Wmgham to enjoy time sift- ing through the Alice Munro Collection at the North Huron Museum or a few quiet moments in the Literary Gar- den. Then, CKNX and Marion de Vries, Artistic Director of the Blyth Festival, will host the Free caregiver education series No one prepares to look after a family member, or friend who is ill. When someone is caring for a fam- ily member or friend, often there are many issues. Learning how to stay healthy in the caregiving role, when there is no previous prepara- tion, can be a challenge. A few of the qualities that help caregivers stay healthy, include knowing how to get help; knowing that stress is a normal part of caregiving, and that getting some kind of a break is essential; having a sense of humour and know- ing when the stress is too much, and what to do about it. VON Perth -Huron is offer- ing a free Caregiver Educa- tion Series at the Royal Cana- dian Legion, in Exeter, ON (316 William Street S., Exe- ter). The Series consists of four sessions in an informal group setting, which cover the importance of taking care of oneself, managing stressful situations in caregiving, stay- ing on top of a care situation, and tackling some of the common emotions, such as guilt and anger. The series begins on Tuesday, Septem- ber 30, and every Tuesday up to, and including October 21, 2014. The sessions start at 1:30 p.m. Caregivers will realize they are not alone in providing care, with all the rewards and challenges involved. Car- egivers will learn some of the feelings that the person receiving the care may expe- rience. There are tips on how to talk to doctors and others providing care, as well as tips on how to find help in the community and leam how to ask for help. Some questions that have been tabled by caregivers at past workshops include: • I haven't taken advantage of respite care until now - how do I go about it? • I find it frustrating to be asked the same questions over and over again when dealing with the various care providers. What can be done about this? • How do I combat the sense of isolation I feel when caregiving in my home? • What options do I, the caregiver have, if I can no longer be the caregiver, but my loved one refuses to leave the home? There is no charge to attend, but registration is required, as space is limited. To register, call Judy King- ston, at 519-271-7991 or 1-800-265-5176 or e-mail judy.kingston@von.ca. second annual "Reading Aloud Allowed in Huron" - the ever -popular open mic event where creative writers, poets, comedians and musicians can share their works - music, comedy, poetry, fiction or non-fiction with an attentive and appreciative audience. This was last year's surprise hit and is a free Culture Day's event that you won't want to miss. Topping off Saturday, the Gala - Appreciating Alice will be held at the Wingham Legion with guest speaker Miranda Hill, co-ordinator of Canada's Project Bookmark. www.projectbookmarkcan- ada.ca) Ms. Hill will talk about E 0 U D 0 0 W 0 c her work on this literary cam- paign as well as her experi- ence as a writer herself and as a member of a literary family. On Sunday, September 28, guests will join organizers for brunch at the Fireside Cafe, Wingham, to chat about the 2014 events, and guide plans for the 2015 Festival which will see some growth through the Alice Munro Partnership Group - a project exploring labour market opportunities in tourism, retail, construc- tion, education and literacy as a result of Ms. Munro's Nobel Prize award. Then, "Through the Eyes of Alice'; a guided walking tour hosted by local historian Jodi Jerome will feature stories about the life of Alice Munro as she grew up in the area.
