HPHA president delivers updates to council
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
Last Monday the president
and chief executive officer of
the Huron Perth Healthcare
Alliance (HPHA), Andrew
Williams, delivered to Central
Huron council a presentation
regarding the purpose and
structure of the HPHA and
explained numerous updates
to the alliance and Clinton
hospital in particular.
At the start of the presenta-
tion Williams explained that
there are three guiding princi-
ples that drive the HPHA's
decisions and define how it
operates, namely, supporting
people, strengthening part-
nerships and improving
performance.
He also explained how the
HPHA has been an organiza-
tion since 2003 and has four
different sites: Clinton, Sea -
forth, St. Marys and Stratford.
These four sites currently have
1,200 staff members (includ-
ing 140 professional staff) and
support 130,000 people.
Williams then went on to
discuss the Clinton hospital in
particular.
As Williams explained, the
Clinton hospital will be receiv-
ing more beds and more staff
in the near future (for exam-
ple, more personal support
workers, or, PSWs), is under-
going renovations in the
emergency room, has
received a special cataracts
program (which was origi-
nally at the Stratford hospital)
and currently has eight family
physicians. He also said that
the HPHA is "constantly look-
ing
ooking for positions" and is
"actively recruiting for
Clinton:'
When it came time for
questions from council, Coun.
Brian Barnim commented on
how there seems to be more
PSWs now than registered
nurses and registered practi-
cal nurses. Williams
responded by stating that the
HPHA recognizes that peo-
ple's needs are different and,
therefore, "a mix of staff" is
required. This mix of staff is
"certainly a change;" Williams
said.
Barnim then asked Wil-
liams about ways that the
municipality could participate
more and Williams responded
by stating that a "good com-
munication channel" is
always important.
Coun. Alex Westerhout
then commented on the
numbers at the Clinton hospi-
tal and asked whether it was
underserviced. Williams
responded by stating that
"eight to nine is a good num-
ber of family physicians" for
the area and assured council
that "right now we are where
we need to be:'
At the end of the presenta-
tion, Mayor Jim Ginn thanked
Williams for the presentation
and various updates and
made special mention of the
increase in beds at the Clinton
hospital. "I am very happy to
see that the bed numbers are
going up" he said.
