Do you like the sport of
soccer but prefer to play
sports indoors? If so, then
the game of futsal might be
the perfect sport for you.
And what is even better is
that a futsal team, called
Huron Football Club (Huron
FC), is currently being put
together right here in Clin-
ton. Once it is complete, the
team will be a part of the
London Canadian Futsal
League meaning that it will
compete against teams from
London and the surround-
ing communities.
The sport of futsal, which
originated in Brazil, is a form
of soccer (not football) that
is most commonly played in
Europe and South America.
Basically, the game is a
match between two teams of
five players (four players
who rotate positions and a
goalie). The main objective
of the sport is to move the
ball within the lines of the
gym and without the use of
walls to score on a 6 foot by 9
foot net.
In the game of futsal the
ball is smaller and heavier
than the ball that is used in
outdoor soccer and the rules
of each sport differ as well.
The different ball, rules and
playing surface used in futsal
create a need for careful
improvisation, creativity,
and technique that is espe-
cially unique to the sport.
Huron FC is currently
seeking advanced skilled
players and organizers
encourage all local boys who
are interested in the sport
and who have a birthday
between 2001 and 2003 to try
out for the team. Currently,
players on the team are from
Clinton, Seaforth, Goderich
and Blyth.
As the manager of Huron
FC, Annie Sparling, states, "it
is so exciting to be bringing
this sport to Huron County.
It's fun, it develops the player
for the outdoor game and it's
another option for kids look-
ing for a way to stay active in
the winter months." She also
notes that it is an inexpen-
sive sport. "All you need," she
says, "is a gym, a few nets,
balls and a coach:'

Blyth, stretching with the players at
the team's practice.
Huron FC trains on Tues-
days and Thursdays from 7
until 8:30 p.m. in the gymna-
sium at Central Huron Sec-
ondary School in Clinton
and its season starts in
November and runs until the
end of March.
Organizers of Huron FC
say that they are grateful to
the Avon Maitland School
Board for allowing them to
train at CHSS through the
Community Use of Schools
program. They are also very
thankful for their team's
coaching staff, namely, the
team's head coach, Poncho
Melo from Goderich who is a
former professional soccer
player from Mexico as well
as their assistant coaches,
Rob Campbell from Blyth,
Joost Vandorp from Blyth
and Mathew Bylsma from
Hensall.
Anyone who is interested
in receiving more informa-
tion regarding Huron FC and
futsal is asked to contact
Annie Sparling of Blyth at
519-523-9303 or Lori Pullen
of Goderich at
519-440-0608.
