New immunization
requirements for
school attendance
The Huron County Health
Unit reminds parents and car-
egivers that three vaccines in
2 E the province's immunization
schedule are now required for
a o students to attend school.
3 Ho Ex Effective July 1, 2014,
a changes to the Immunization
of School Pupils Act (ISPA)
require students to have
immunizations against per-
tussis
(whooping cough) and
meningitis. Children starting
junior kindergarten this year
must also receive the varicella
(chickenpox) vaccine.
"These vaccines are in the
Essoa¢
o t Publicly Funded Immuniza-
tion Schedule for Ontario but
a o N were not previously required
for school attendance," says
Public Health Nurse Shirley
Chalmers. "The changes help
g = further protect children and
3 M communities against vaccine -
preventable diseases."
9i Ontario students are
already required to receive
__ Em
immunizations against diph-
theria, tetanus, polio, measles,
mv, i0jo
6 d e o mumps and rubella.
Health units are required to
g d keep immunization records of
all students. The Huron
County Health Unit usually
E ` y receives immunization infor-
mation from parents and car-
egivers through the school
z = h registration process. The copy
provided to the school is sent
to the Health Unit.

_ " E cine after they have registered

BACKGROUNDER about
the required immunizations.
Pertussis is included in vac-
cinations given at 2, 4, 6 and
18 months, as well as the 4 - 6
year booster. It is also in the
booster given to high school
students.
Meningitis vaccine is now
given at one year of age. A sec-
ond type is given to 12 -year-
olds in grade 7. Both are now
required depending on the
age of your child. The grade 7
vaccine is offered in school-
based clinics.
Children born in 2010
require two doses of the vari-
cella vaccine for school
attendance. Varicella vaccine
is given to children 15 months
old with a second dose given
with the age 4 - 6 booster. The
second dose may be com-
bined with the measles,
mumps and rubella (MMR)
vaccine. Older children are
not required to have the vac-
cine but it is recommended.
Free nicotine replacement
therapy for smokers
September is the second -
most popular month for
smokers to try to quit. The
Huron County Health Unit is
offering free nicotine
replacement therapy to help
smokers kick the habit for
good this fall.
"For many smokers the
cost of nicotine replacement
products can be a barrier to
quitting," says Julie Verch,
Public Health Nurse. "That's
why we are offering work-
shops as part of the STOP
program."
The STOP (Smoking Treat-
ment for Ontario Patients)
Program offers eligible par-
ticipants five weeks of cost-
free nicotine replacement
therapy. The program also
offers tips on making a suc-
cessful quit attempt.
The next STOP workshop
will be held in Clinton on
September 30. Pre -registra-
tion is required so please
register early. To check your
eligibility and register, call
Julie Verch at 519.482.3416
or 1.877.837.6143.
The STOP Program is put
on in partnership with the
Centre for Addiction and
Mental Health.
