This year the Vanastra
Community Christian
Reformed Church is celebrat-
ing its 25th anniversary as an
organized church and invites
the community to join them
this weekend.
On September 20 from 11
a.m. until 3 p.m. the church
will be hosting a BBQ picnic
lunch which will include
games for the young and old,
a bouncy castle and face
painting and on September 21
at 10 a.m. it will hold a cele-
bratory worship service fol-
lowed by a light lunch recep-
tion. The church encourages
people to come out and "rem-
inisce with old friends and
meet new people:'
The Vanastra Community
CRC describes itself as a fam-
ily friendly community church
and offers various activities
and events including Sunday
school for ages 2 through
grade 4, Gems, a club for girls
in grades 4-8, Cadets, a club
for boys in grades 4-8, seniors
games as well as a weekly
coffee break and bible study.
The church also offers a youth
group for high school aged
youth when there is interest.
Sitting on the site of the for-
mer Canadian Forces Base
(CFB) Clinton, the first radar
training school for the govern-
ment of Canada, the Vanastra
Community CRC is located on
an important and historic
piece of land.
When CFB Clinton was
closed in 1971, sold to a real
estate developer and renamed
Vanastra there were no
churches in the immediate
vicinity. But, as time went on,
a congregation began to
emerge in Vanastra and in
1973 Karl Boersma became
the congregation's first pastor.
Other important contribu-
tors to the Vanastra Commu-
nity CRC include Jim and
Hilda Visser who supported
the church for many years. As
coffee break leader, Corry
Haak, says, the Vissers "were
very well liked in the commu-
nity:' Also, Siemen Speelman
lead the church from 1999
until 2013 making him the
church's longest running pas-
tor. Speelman was
"a good organizer,"
says Haak, "he got
a lot of things
done." Pastor
Homer Samplo-
nius is another
important person
as he was the one
to lead the cele-
bratory service
when the Vanastra
congregation was
formally recog-
nized as an organ-
ized church on

Community CRC youth
leader, Sonya Wubs, the book
will capture the "history of the
church, its current member-
ship as well as new and old
pictures:'
Wubs also points
out that, currently,
there is a "missing
demographic" in
the church and says
that "she would
love for the com-
munity's youth to
come out." As the
church says,
"whether you are
on vacation and
looking for a church
to attend, or are
looking for a church
home, we want you
to feel welcome:'
Currently, the
Vanastra Commu-
