HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News Record, 2014-09-03, Page 66 News Record • Wednesday, September 3, 2014 Clinton doctor seeks Huron -Bruce federal Liberal nomination On August 22, 2014, the Liberal party of Canada approved Maarten Bokhout of Clinton, Ontario as a Nomination Contestant in the federal riding of Huron -Bruce. Dr. Bokhout has lived and worked as a physician in Huron County since 1987. He has been Site Chief of Clinton Public Hospital for the past four years. He is the Acting Medical Officer of Health for the County of Huron. He is a frontline rural phy- sician who, in addition to his family practice, works in the emergency depart- ment and inpatient unit of Clinton Public Hospital. He delivers babies, teaches medical students and residents as adjunct professor of family medi- cine at the University of Western Ontario, is the medical director of Huron - lea Home for the Aged in Brussels, Ontario, and serves as one of Huron County's coroners. Upon completion of his medical training at the Uni- versity of Toronto, he worked for several years as a physician and Medical Officer of Health in North- ern Newfoundland and Labrador, and still serves as a locum physician in St. Anthony, Newfoundland on a regular basis when needed. Since 2007, he has provided financial support for one of two medical clinics in Ng'Ombe compound, serv- ing a population in excess of 70,000 people. He has travelled to Africa on a reg- ular basis to oversee the operations of these pro- jects, most recently last November. Born in the Netherlands, Maarten Bokhout moved to Canada with his family in 1957. He lived in Ottawa, Westbrook, Kingston, Toronto, Flower's Cove, Forteau and St. Anthony before settling in Huron County in 1987. He cur- rently lives near Blyth on a 100 acre farm. Proceeds from farming operations are donated to the Cana- dian Foodgrains Bank. He is married and has five grown children. Maarten Bokhout wel- comes the opportunity to contest the Liberal candi- dacy for MP with professor Allan Thompson of Ottawa.
