Located north of Bruce -
field, the striking building is,
quite literally, a castle. More
specifically, it is called the
Brucefield Castle. While it is
unknown when exactly the
castle was built, the year
1843 is marked on a grave
located on the property. It is
also unknown who the
builders were. However, we
do know that the builders
designed the castle after the
Friarton Brea Castle in
Scotland.
The majestic castle is five
stories high (including a fin-
ished basement), con-
structed with three layers of
brick, has various decorative
gables throughout the house
and showcases a tower at the
top of the house that is
topped with fancy brick-
work, carved wooden cor-
nices and a pyramid -shaped
roof.
Inside, the castle features
12 -foot high ceilings on the
main floor, four fireplaces
(two on the main floor and
two on the upper floor), orig-
inal trim around the win-
dows and a four -seasons
sunroom which was added
on to the home.
At one point the castle also
included a servants' quarters
at the back of the castle,
however, this area burned
down some time ago.
As McFarlan points out, if
it wasn't for the castle's pre-
vious owners, the castle
might not have lasted; by
doing so much work to the
home, the previous owners,
he says, "saved it from ruin"
Once this castle is fully
decorated for the holidays it
will be sure to impress mak-
ing this one location that
participants of the house
tour will not want to miss.
The entire main floor of the
house will be open for view-
ing during the tour and,
depending on the weather,
Lee and McFarlan may open
up their backyard as well.
