Clinton News Record, 2014-10-22, Page 17deductible. "Yep, we sure do" he says, "but only to a maximum of $50." The decision remains on whether to spend the money or leave it until the finances can bear the debt. Some drivers normally choose to wait. They have driven for months with a cracked windshield, so why not wait a little longer? Thefact isthatthestrength ofthe g lass is greatly compromised when cracked, and wind, debris, and other objects that fly into your vehicle could cause it to break entirely. Don't worry though - the windshield is made of safety glass. That is, when it breaks, it does so into tiny pieces but remains as one because of a film of plastic sandwiched within the glass. When the chip was first created, a visit to the glass shop would have resolved the damage byfilling it with a clear resin that glues the glass back together. This prevents a tiny chip from becoming a "must repair" crack. The process is certainly not for the do-it-yourselfer though, and requires special equipment to solidify the chemical to the glass. When you notice a chip, have it filled as soon as possible. The cost for such a repair normally is under $100 and takes a fraction of the time it would to replace the whole windshield. Most glass shops offer the service, and some auto parts stores have a drive-thru station for a quick fix. Wednesday, October 22, 2014 • 2014 Fall Car Care Guide 5 Know your tire ratings Arathernormaloccurrence for vehicle owners is tire replacement, and car owners should expect to replace theirtires at leastfourtimes during the lifespan of their car. Replacing tires can be quite a challenge for some drivers considering how many different brands and styles are available today. The numerous varieties that are offered as replacements can leave you scratching your head. Visiting a tire dealer might help, but you should have some basic knowledge up front so that the selection is suitable for the type of driving that you do. Unfortunately, too many people choose their tires based on price and end up compromising, choosing rubber that doesn't suit their vehicle or driving habits. The first priority when you're out looking for tires is to know what the ratings represent. These are performance specifications written on the sidewall pertaining to the production characteristics of that tire. Just as the size is moulded into the sidewalls, so are the ratings. Tire manufacturers have always put the tire specifications on the sidewalls. Maximum inflation, side-wall construction, production date, and load limitations are but a few pieces of key information found there. Durability and speed are also shown. Tires with a grade "A" rating have the most durability, while a "B" rating is slightly less, followed by "C."The speed rating is depicted by a letter within the size designation. This relatestothe highest and safest speeds suitable for that tire. The typical letter designations for speeds are, "H,""S;"V," and "Z." The speed rating is a testament to the construction ofthetire and the materials used to make it. You should select tires based on thetype of driving you do, starting with the speed and then the load rating. When the time comes to make the purchase, spend the extra money and have a computerized balance done. Complete the service with a four- wheel alignment to get the most performance and durability from your new tires. ' y `. f — Lr. BEAT RUSH 6 0 ■ ERICH . . , r . ►,1 1 hi . .
