Preparing you
and your vehicle for winter
Steph Smith
As the weather begins to change, it's
important to maintain your vehicle in
preparation for the winter months.
One of the most important aspects of winter
maintenance is preparing your car for heading
out on a snowy drive. There are many things you
can do to make your winter driving a lot easier on
you andyourvehicle, here are sometipsfrom CAA:
• Leave your house in enough timesoyou're not
rushing to get to where you need to be.
• Check the Weather Network before heading
out to fi nd outthe current and forecasted weather
and road conditions.
• Drive slowly before attempting to drive at the
posted speed limit in order to gauge the road
condition.
• When turning, accelerating or stopping, slow
down to maintain control ofthe vehicle and avoid
loss of traction on the roads. Look in the direction
you want to go and steer in that direction.
• Get a winter oil change and top up all fluids
including deicing washer fluid and antifreeze.
• Get new wiper blades.
• Check all of your vehicles lights including the
headlights, taillights, backup lights, signal lights
and hazard lights. Replace any that do not work
properly or have burned out.
• Get a set of winter tires and check your tire
pressure often.
In case of an emergency or if you become
stranded, it is also a good idea to have a roadside
emergency kit. Roadside assistance providers,
such as CAA and Canadian Tire, normally have a
pre -stocked emergency kitthatyou can purchase.
Ifyou're looking to build your own kit, here are a
few basicitemsthatyoushould include,according
to Ontario's Ministry of Transportation and the
Canadian Automobile Association:
• An ice scraper with a snowbrush
• A shovel.
• Jumper cables.
• A blanket.
• A basic first aid kit.
• An extra pair of mittens or gloves and socks.
• A candle, waterproof matches and a small
tin. Not only does a candle help light the car in
the dark, but it also generates heat. Remember
to crack your window if you plan on using the
candle for long periods of time, as candles create
carbon monoxide.
• A flashlight and batteries.
• Non-perishable food such as granola bars.
• Road flares.

• Extra washer fluid.
• Salt, sand or cat litter to help get your vehicle
off of an ice patch.
These are just some of the recommended
items that you should include in your kit, but of
course you can modify your kit by adding other
useful items.
If there ever becomes a time where you're
stranded, be it you pulling over because of bad
weather/poor visibility or if you end up stuck in
the ditch, it's important to turn on your hazard
lights so that people can see you.
Before your head out into inclement weather,
it's also a good idea to pack an overnight bag in
case you are forced to stay the night at work or at
a friend's, coworker's or family member's house.
Your overnight bag could include:
• A change of clothes.
• Pyjamas.
• A toothbrush and toothpaste.
• A towel and a face cloth.
• A hairbrush.
• Hygiene products.
These arejustsomeofthebasicitemsthatcould
be included in an overnight bag. An overnight
bag should contain things that won't easily freeze.
